Hero Mom Dies Saving 4-Year-Old Son from Florida River

A Florida mother who used her last ounce of strength to hold her 4-year-old son above the waters of the St. Johns River has died, authorities confirmed, in a story of maternal sacrifice that has resonated across the nation.

Nicole Grayson, 43, a mother of six from DeLand, Florida, jumped into the river at Ed Stone Park around 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, after her young son fell into the water while trying to retrieve an object he had dropped over a wooden fence, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

The Rescue

Witnesses at the park flagged down a passing boater, who threw two life preservers toward Grayson and her child. As the current pulled them downstream, Grayson became submerged while continuing to hold her son above the water. The boater maneuvered close enough to pull the 4-year-old aboard, unharmed.

Jon Reaka, another witness, jumped onto the boat and helped lift Grayson from the river. She was unresponsive when brought aboard. “She spent all her energy trying to get her kid up over the edge,” Reaka told FOX 35. “I jumped over the rail, jumped onto the boat and pulled the lady up onto the boat and, you know, we started CPR — I started CPR and mouth-to-mouth immediately.”

A frantic 911 caller captured the desperation of the moment, telling dispatchers: “We have a mother that’s drowned, and we got the baby, but we can’t get the mama,” according to audio obtained by WKMG/ClickOrlando.

EMS personnel took over lifesaving measures upon arrival, and Grayson was rushed to a hospital. She was pronounced dead in the intensive care unit around 10 p.m. that evening.

A Mother’s Sacrifice

Grayson’s oldest son, Dafino Devega, described the harrowing sequence of events to FOX 35. “My guess is he was trying to get it. He slipped in the water, deep, he slipped away in the water,” Devega said. “And then my mom, I guess she panicked, and she went in the water and tried to save him.”

Devega called his mother a hero. “That’s the type of mom that she was; she was a hero,” he said. “My mom, she was a strong woman. She would do anything to keep her kids safe.”

Montraevia Adams, Grayson’s oldest daughter, described her mother in a GoFundMe campaign as “caring, supportive, selfless, and always willing to sacrifice her time to make sure we had what we needed.” The fundraiser was established to cover funeral costs and support Grayson’s children.

Official Response

Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood praised the witnesses and the boater who rushed to help. “Sheriff Chitwood and the entire Volusia Sheriff’s Office send sincere thanks all who jumped in to help with the rescue, and deepest condolences to Ms. Grayson’s family and friends for their loss of a mother who gave her life to save her son,” the department said in a statement.

Chitwood said Grayson would be remembered as a hero, “not just because of her final heroic act, but because she was a mom who would do anything for her kids.”

Broader Concerns

The incident has also raised questions about park safety infrastructure. According to News4JAX, the section of fence where the child fell through had only the lower rows of fencing in place. Local media have asked Volusia County whether the fence was already in that condition before the incident and whether repairs are planned.

Florida has one of the highest drowning rates in the United States, particularly among children, due to its extensive network of rivers, lakes, and coastline. The tragedy has renewed calls for water safety awareness across the state.
