Beijing Hosts First Middle School Robot Soccer Tournament

Beijing has successfully concluded its first-ever middle school humanoid robot soccer tournament, a landmark event that brought together 55 student teams from across the city’s 16 districts and the Xiong’an New Area in Hebei Province. The final match, held on July 22 at the High School Affiliated to Tsinghua University, showcased the integration of robotics education with competitive sports as students programmed and operated humanoid robots in 3V3 soccer matches.

A New Arena for STEM Learning

Organized by the Beijing Municipal Education Commission, the tournament launched on April 11, 2026, and featured months of preparation. Students underwent systematic pre-competition training from May through June, covering Booster K1 robot operation, 3V3 competition rules, team offensive and defensive tactics, hardware troubleshooting, and on-site emergency handling.

The competition was divided into two groups: Group A with 24 teams and Group B with 31 teams. After regional selections, group stages, and elimination rounds, the grand finals crowned champions in both categories. Beijing No. 171 Middle School’s “Qixizhe” team took the Group A championship, while Miyun District No. 2 Middle School’s “Tiangong Team 2” won Group B. The two champions played a friendly exhibition match following the finals.

Students at the Controls

For the student participants, the tournament was as much about collaboration as it was about technology. Luan Binglin, captain of Beijing No. 4 Middle School’s Sitou Mech Team, which finished as Group A runner-up, described the experience as deeply rewarding.

“Throughout the entire competition, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Whether it was the early debugging and programming, or the later division of roles on the field, it all required close coordination and cooperation among us, and we worked together very well.”

Luo Yi, a Grade 10 student and captain of the Group B champion Tiangong Team 2 from Miyun, explained how his team refined their approach through iteration. “We repeatedly modified the code to make the robot’s shooting more powerful and its judgment of the goal position more accurate,” Luo told Beijing Daily.

A Strategic Investment in AI Talent

The tournament represents far more than a one-off competition. It is a concrete implementation of China’s national strategy to build a comprehensive AI literacy system across all levels of schooling. In March 2026, China’s Ministry of Education issued binding AI education guidelines aiming to introduce AI education in all primary and secondary schools by 2030 and make AI integral to textbooks, exams, and classrooms by 2035.

Beijing has been at the forefront of this push. Every primary and secondary school student in the capital now takes at least eight class hours of AI courses per academic year, and by the end of 2025, AI adoption across Beijing schools had reached 87.7 percent, according to Li Yi, director of the Beijing Municipal Education Commission, as reported by China Daily.

Zhang Yaotian, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Education Commission, highlighted the educational philosophy behind the tournament. “The robot soccer competition is an excellent scenario,” Zhang said. “Driven by curiosity, thirst for knowledge, desire to explore, and competitive spirit, children can quickly integrate and apply various knowledge and skills, rapidly mastering and utilizing them.”

Pathway to International Competition

The tournament’s winning teams will be recommended for the World Humanoid Robot Games U19 category, with the second edition of the games scheduled to take place in Beijing from August 22 to 26, 2026. The first edition, held in Beijing in August 2025, featured over 500 humanoid robots competing in events ranging from 100-meter hurdles to kung fu.

This pathway from local competition to international stage reflects China’s broader ambitions in embodied AI. The country has established its first national humanoid robot and embodied intelligence standards system, and Chinese manufacturers dominate the global humanoid robot market, with approximately 18,000 units shipped worldwide in 2025, according to IDC.

What This Means for the Future

The tournament exemplifies a new model of education that connects classroom teaching with practical experience and competition-based improvement. By creating a hands-on, competitive robotics platform for middle school students, Beijing is operationalizing its policy goal of transitioning AI education from theoretical textbook learning to real-world innovation practice.

As China pushes toward its 2030 and 2035 AI education targets, events like this robot soccer tournament are likely to become more common — and more competitive. The question now is whether this model will expand to other Chinese cities and whether the students who participated will form the next generation of AI and robotics talent that China is counting on to lead the global embodied intelligence revolution.
