SAN DIEGO (AP) — Comic-Con 2026 has officially kicked off in San Diego, with more than 120,000 pop culture fans expected to descend on the convention center through Sunday. The four-day extravaganza, which began in 1970 with a gathering of several hundred sci-fi and comics fans, is headlined by two of the most anticipated events in recent memory: Marvel Studios’ return to Hall H and the first major panel for the long-awaited “Spaceballs” sequel, according to AP News.
Marvel’s High-Stakes Comeback
Marvel Studios is returning to Hall H on Saturday, July 25 at 5:30 p.m. PT, after taking a year off in 2025. The panel is expected to feature the first public screening of the “Avengers: Doomsday” trailer, with the film releasing December 18, 2026. As AP News reported, the cast includes Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Anthony Mackie (Captain America), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), and many more.
Robert Downey Jr., who revealed his return to the MCU as Doctor Doom at Comic-Con 2024, is expected to appear in Hall H once again. The Hollywood Reporter noted that the newly released “Avengers: Doomsday” trailer has already fueled fan excitement as the film’s Dec. 18 release approaches.
“The Avengers appear set to return to Hall H as Marvel Studios uses Comic-Con International to build hype for the December release of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ — and chart a path forward as audience interest in superhero films has waned,” the AP reported. “That panel on Saturday is the most-anticipated hour of the nation’s biggest pop culture convention.”
The Schwartz Is With Us: Spaceballs Sequel Panel
On Friday, July 24 at 4 p.m., Hall H will host the cast and filmmakers behind “Spaceballs: The New One” — the sequel to Mel Brooks’ 1987 cult classic. The film, directed by Josh Greenbaum and co-written by Josh Gad, Dan Hernandez, and Benji Samit, is scheduled for release on April 23, 2027.
Returning cast members include Mel Brooks, Rick Moranis (Lord Dark Helmet), Bill Pullman (Lone Starr), Daphne Zuniga (Queen Vespa), and George Wyner (Colonel Sandurz). New additions include Lewis Pullman as Prince Starburst (Lone Starr and Vespa’s son), Keke Palmer as Destiny, and Anthony Carrigan in an undisclosed role.
Mel Brooks, who turned 100 on June 28, 2026, remains actively involved in the project. At CinemaCon in April, Brooks appeared via video to announce the title, explaining, “It’s just like the old one, but it’s newer.” He joked that the film was not called “Spaceballs: The Search for More Money” because, as he put it, “I found the money. It was in my basement.”
The American Film Institute marked Brooks’ centennial by naming “Blazing Saddles” the funniest film of all time, displacing “Some Like It Hot” from the top spot. As AP News noted, Brooks said, “I was born to make people laugh. So, I do that.”

Beyond Marvel and Spaceballs, this year’s Comic-Con features a packed schedule of major panels. DC Studios, which sat out 2025’s convention, returns to showcase its HBO “Lanterns” series with a Friday panel featuring Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler. Other notable Hall H events include “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” (July 24), the 20th anniversary celebration of Guillermo del Toro’s “Pan’s Labyrinth” (July 24), and the “Star Trek” 60th anniversary panel (July 25) featuring franchise legends George Takei, Michael Dorn, and Robert Picardo.

Fan reactions from Marvel’s Saturday Hall H presentation will be closely monitored as a barometer of the studio’s continued cultural relevance.
