Rare Magnitude 5.0 Earthquake Rattles Texas and Oklahoma Plains
A rare magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck the Texas Panhandle early Thursday morning, marking the strongest earthquake recorded in the region in over 100 years. The quake, centered approximately 24 miles southeast of Miami, Texas, sent shaking across Texas, Oklahoma, and into western Kansas, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The earthquake struck early Thursday morning at a shallow depth of just 3.42 miles (5.7 km), making it more widely felt than a deeper quake of the same magnitude would have been. The USGS reported a maximum Modified Mercalli Intensity of VI (Strong) near the epicenter, with shaking felt by hundreds of residents across the region.
A Historic Event for the Region
According to the USGS earthquake catalog, this was the strongest earthquake recorded in the Texas Panhandle and only the fourth magnitude 4.0 or stronger earthquake to strike the region since 1900. The Texas Panhandle sits atop the Amarillo Uplift and adjacent to the Anadarko Basin, where buried fault structures exist. Previous notable events include a magnitude 4.5 earthquake near Perryton, Texas, in February 1972 and another magnitude 4.5 near Dalhart, Texas, in March 1948, as reported by the Plainview Herald.
“According to the USGS earthquake catalog, this was the strongest earthquake recorded in the Texas Panhandle and only the fourth magnitude 4.0 or stronger earthquake to strike the region since 1900,” Fox Weather reported.
Fox Weather initially reported the quake as a magnitude 5.1, while the USGS officially recorded it as a 5.0. Such minor discrepancies between preliminary and final magnitude readings are common as seismic networks refine their calculations.
Widespread Shaking, No Major Damage
Despite its historic significance, no injuries or significant damage were reported. The USGS PAGER system issued a GREEN alert, indicating low economic impact and low likelihood of fatalities. The agency noted that while the region’s population generally resides in structures resistant to earthquake shaking, vulnerable building types — primarily unreinforced brick masonry and reinforced masonry construction — exist in older rural towns.
“Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are resistant to earthquake shaking, though vulnerable structures exist,” the USGS said in its impact assessment. “The predominant vulnerable building types are unreinforced brick masonry and reinforced masonry construction.”
Residents across the affected area described being jolted awake by the shaking. One Facebook user shared via the National Weather Service Amarillo that they were “awakened by thunder-like rumble and shaking in Pampa” around the time of the quake. Another resident in Mobeetie reported the shaking “lasted about 20 seconds or so. A picture fell off a shelf also.”
In White Deer, one resident told The Guardian: “It was wild! We live in White Deer. I was standing, and it threw me way off balance. Talk about a strange feeling.”
As of 7 a.m., 248 people had reported feeling the earthquake to the USGS, with reports coming in from as far as Lubbock, Texas, and Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Earthquake Tracker later recorded 411 responses with a maximum community intensity of 6.6 CDI.
Aftershock Follows
Later in the day, a magnitude 3.9 aftershock struck near Westbrook, Texas, approximately 14 miles from the initial epicenter, at around 1:15 p.m. local time. The USGS forecasts a 10% chance of a magnitude 4 or larger aftershock and a 42% chance of a magnitude 3 or larger event within the next week.
Questions About Cause
The Texas Panhandle sits atop the Amarillo Uplift and adjacent to the Anadarko Basin, where buried fault structures exist. While the region has experienced a notable increase in seismic activity over the past two decades — much of it linked to wastewater injection from oil and gas operations in the Permian Basin — the specific cause of this earthquake has not yet been officially attributed to either natural tectonic processes or induced seismicity.
Texas has seen significant induced seismicity research from institutions including Southern Methodist University and the University of Texas Bureau of Economic Geology, which have documented links between wastewater injection and increased earthquake rates. The Texas Railroad Commission regulates injection wells and has implemented mitigation strategies in seismically active areas.
