WTT China Grand Slam 2026 Returns to Beijing’s Shougang Park
The WTT China Grand Slam 2026 is scheduled to take place from October 1 to October 11 at Shougang Park in Beijing’s Shijingshan District, with China set to field its strongest lineup in what has become a marquee event on the global table tennis calendar. The announcement was made at a press conference and investment promotion event held on July 22 at the Beijing Yinbaojian State Guesthouse, as reported by China News Service.
A Premier Event on the Global Calendar
The WTT China Grand Slam, which debuted in Beijing in 2024, has quickly established itself as one of the premier events in the World Table Tennis (WTT) series, alongside Grand Smashes in Singapore and Saudi Arabia. The 2026 edition coincides with China’s National Day holiday, making it a centerpiece of the country’s Golden Week celebrations. According to Phoenix News, the tournament serves as “a core window to showcase China’s table tennis strength and urban charm to the world.”
China will send its best table tennis lineup to compete, underscoring the importance of the event for both national pride and sports diplomacy. The tournament is also a flagship event within Beijing’s “Dual Olympic 100” premium event system, which aims to host over 100 major domestic and international sports events annually using legacy venues from the 2008 Summer and 2022 Winter Olympics.
Venue Upgrades and Enhanced Fan Experience
Shougang Park, a former industrial steel mill complex transformed into a multi-purpose cultural and sports district, will undergo comprehensive upgrades for the 2026 edition. Chen Shang, General Manager of Beijing Shougang Construction Investment Co., Ltd., stated that “the event venues and Grand Slam Park within Shougang Park will undergo comprehensive quality upgrades, achieving new breakthroughs in software and hardware facilities, viewing experience, and scene integration,” as quoted by the Beijing Government Portal.
Key upgrades include the conversion of the former short track speed skating venue into an esports center with high-standard audio-visual systems and panoramic screens. For the first time, the spectator stands of the Shougang Ski Jumping Platform — a landmark venue from the 2022 Winter Olympics — will be opened to the public, creating a unique outdoor viewing experience. The event will also feature dual north-south entry channels for faster access, free shuttle buses, parking discounts, and dedicated fan leisure zones with specialty dining and self-service bag storage.
Youth Development and Economic Impact
For the second consecutive year, the China Youth Grand Slam will be held concurrently at the same venue, bringing together young players from multiple countries and regions to compete alongside China’s national youth team. This initiative, described by CCTV Sports as a “‘Grand Slam + Youth Future’ linkage mechanism,” positions Shougang Park as both a championship venue and a talent incubator for the next generation of table tennis stars.
The 2025 edition of the event delivered impressive economic results: direct economic revenue of 154 million RMB (up 73% year-on-year), ticket revenue of 88 million RMB (a WTT series record), and 986,000 visitor trips to Shougang Park during the event period. Shijingshan District recorded over 700 million RMB in holiday tourism consumption, a new district record. The tournament also achieved a global viewership of 487 million, with total online exposure reaching 20.075 billion impressions and a media value of $569 million USD.
Strategic Importance and Forward Look
The 2026 edition marks the first year of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030), and Shijingshan District has positioned sports events and the sports economy as a key strategic priority. The district has launched five themed tour routes under the “Surprises in Western Beijing” brand, integrating the tournament with local tourism through a “Surprise Consumption Map” that provides panoramic consumer guidance.
First-round ticket sales will begin in mid-to-late August 2026. Sponsors including Agricultural Bank of China, Cotti Coffee, Beijing Energy Group, New China Life Insurance, and Yanjing Beer have expressed cooperation intent for the 2026 edition. As the event continues to grow in scale and significance, it represents not only a celebration of world-class table tennis but also a powerful demonstration of Beijing’s successful post-industrial transformation and Olympic legacy utilization.
