Belgian Mathematician Yurii Nesterov Wins Gauss Prize

A Belgian mathematician has been awarded one of the most prestigious prizes in applied mathematics. Yurii Nesterov, professor emeritus at UCLouvain, received the Carl Friedrich Gauss Prize on Thursday at the opening ceremony of the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Philadelphia, in recognition of his groundbreaking work in mathematical optimization that powers technologies from artificial intelligence to logistics.

The Prize

The Carl Friedrich Gauss Prize, awarded jointly by the Deutsche Mathematiker-Vereinigung and the International Mathematical Union (IMU), honors scientists whose mathematical research has had a major impact outside mathematics — in technology, business, or everyday life. According to the IMU, the prize recognizes Nesterov “for his groundbreaking work on mathematical optimization that provided the theoretical foundation and algorithmic backbone for many numerical and data-driven fields, enabling practical computations that were previously too time-consuming to be feasible.”

Established in 2006 and awarded every four years at the ICM, the Gauss Prize has previously been awarded to luminaries such as Kiyosi Itô, John G. Thompson, and George Lusztig.

A Surprise Recognition

Nesterov expressed genuine surprise at the honor. In an interview with La Libre Belgique, he remarked: “I didn’t expect it, because pure mathematicians are a bit snobs!” The comment reflects a long-standing cultural divide between pure and applied mathematics, where applied mathematicians sometimes feel undervalued by their pure-mathematics counterparts.

Who Is Yurii Nesterov?

Born in Moscow in 1956, Nesterov graduated in applied mathematics from Moscow State University in 1977 and earned his doctorate from the Institute of Control Sciences in 1984. After a decade as a researcher at the Central Economic Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, he moved to Belgium in 1993 and joined UCLouvain, where he has been based ever since at the École polytechnique de Louvain and the Center for Operations Research and Econometrics (CORE).

Nesterov is a world-renowned specialist in convex optimization. His work on accelerated gradient methods — widely known as “Nesterov momentum” — has become foundational in modern machine learning and deep learning. He co-authored the seminal book “Interior-point polynomial algorithms in convex programming” with Arkadii Nemirovskii, and his 2004 book “Introductory Lectures on Convex Optimization” is a standard reference in the field.

His methods are used across transportation, finance, logistics, and artificial intelligence, enabling computations that were previously too slow to be practical.

A Career of Distinction

The Gauss Prize is the latest in a long line of honors for Nesterov. He previously received the George Dantzig Prize (2000), the John von Neumann Theory Prize (2009), the EURO Gold Medal (2016), and the World Laureates Association Prize in Computer Science or Mathematics (2023). He was elected to Academia Europaea in 2021 and the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 2022.

The ICM 2026

The Gauss Prize was awarded during the opening ceremony of the ICM 2026, which runs from July 23 to July 30 in Philadelphia — the first ICM held in the United States since 1986. The same ceremony also awarded the Fields Medals, often described as the “Nobel Prize of mathematics,” to four mathematicians under 40: Yu Deng (University of Chicago), John Pardon (Stony Brook University), Jacob Tsimerman (University of Toronto), and Hong Wang (NYU/IHES).

As the Simons Foundation reported, the conference is supported by the American Mathematical Society and the Simons Foundation.

What This Means for Belgium

This award places Belgium prominently on the global mathematics stage. Nesterov has been at UCLouvain for more than three decades, contributing to the university’s strong tradition in operations research and optimization. The prize underscores the vital role of applied mathematics in solving real-world problems and highlights Belgium’s growing recognition in the international mathematics community.
