Dyle River at Record Low as Belgium’s Drought Crisis Worsens

The Dyle River in Walloon Brabant has fallen to its lowest recorded level, surpassing even the severe drought of 2020, as an intensifying drought crisis grips Belgium. According to RTBF, the river is currently 10 centimeters below the already critically low levels observed five years ago, prompting alarm from local environmental groups and regional authorities.

A River in Crisis

The Dyle (Dijle in Dutch) flows approximately 86 kilometers from its source in Houtain-le-Val through Louvain-la-Neuve, Wavre, and Leuven before joining the Rupel River. It is a vital waterway supporting local ecosystems, agriculture, and recreation in central Belgium. Now, its exposed banks reveal the severity of a drought that has been building since early 2026.

Ann-Laure Furnelle, founder of the local river cleanup association Aer Aqua Terra, expressed her dismay to RTBF: “I thought I had experienced the worst regarding water stress and the level of the Dyle in 2020. It must be noted that the phenomenon is intensifying this year.” She added that she has never seen the river at such a low level since beginning her conservation work in 2013. “It’s heartbreaking when you look at the opposite bank and see all these roots exposed to the air when they are normally completely submerged. The Dyle lacks water, it’s catastrophic.”

Escalating Drought Measures Across Belgium

The Dyle’s record low is the latest symptom of a drought that has tightened its grip on Belgium since April 2026, which was recorded as an exceptionally dry month. Authorities have responded with increasingly urgent measures.

On July 15, Governor Jan Spooren announced a ban on water extraction across the entire province of Flemish Brabant, as reported. The prohibition covers all non-navigable waterways and public canals, with exceptions only for drinking water for livestock. Similar bans were already in place in West Flanders, Limburg, and parts of East Flanders and Antwerp.

Just one day later, on July 16, the entire Flanders region entered “code orange” — a phase of effective water scarcity. According to VRT NWS, approximately 70% of groundwater measurement points now show low to very low levels. River flow rates and water levels have dropped sharply, and the Drought Commission has implemented measures including grouped sluice operations for shipping and restrictions on agricultural water extraction.

Wallonia has also been affected, with multiple communes restricting water usage, while Brussels Environment activated a “yellow level” drought alert on July 22.

Ecological Toll

The declining water levels are taking a severe toll on the river ecosystem. Exposed tree roots along the banks weaken the vegetation that stabilizes the river, while higher water temperatures promote bacterial proliferation. With lower water volume, pollutants entering the Dyle — including household waste, industrial discharge, and agricultural runoff — become more concentrated, posing heightened risks to aquatic life and public health.

Furnelle’s association, Aer Aqua Terra, has been cleaning the Dyle riverbed since 2013. While the low water makes cleanup operations easier, this small benefit is overshadowed by deep ecological concern.

A Climate Change Signal

The drought afflicting Belgium is not an isolated weather event but part of a broader pattern tied to global warming. A study published on July 23 by the World Weather Attribution (WWA) consortium found that climate change has made soil drought approximately 11 times more likely in the region encompassing Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Poland, according to RTBF.

The researchers noted that extreme heat is becoming the primary driver of droughts on the European continent, as higher temperatures intensify evaporation. With global warming currently at approximately 1.4°C above pre-industrial levels, the scientists warned that each additional fraction of a degree will worsen these phenomena. At 2.8°C of warming, the probability of such extreme evaporation could double.

Broader Regional Impacts

Other Belgian rivers are suffering similar fates. The Semois, Ourthe, and Meuse have all experienced significantly reduced water levels. Kayak operations on the Ourthe in Hamoir have been suspended due to insufficient water. The crisis stands in stark contrast to the catastrophic floods of July 2021, when the Dyle reached 3.78 meters in Wavre — highlighting the growing volatility of Belgium’s waterways.

Farmers across the country are adapting their practices, and the economic impacts continue to mount, with agricultural losses and transport disruptions threatening supply chains.

What to Watch

With no significant rainfall forecast for the coming days, conditions are expected to deteriorate further before any improvement. The Dyle-Gette river contract, recently renewed for 2026-2028 in Perwez, represents ongoing efforts at coordinated water management. However, the current crisis may accelerate broader reforms in Belgium’s complex federal system, where coordination between Wallonia, Flanders, and Brussels remains a persistent challenge.

For now, the Dyle’s exposed riverbed stands as an urgent symbol of a country confronting the accelerating realities of a warming climate.
