Slovak President Pellegrini to Make State Visit to China

Slovak President Peter Pellegrini will pay a state visit to China from July 27 to 29 at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday. The visit, Pellegrini’s first to China since assuming office and the first by a Slovak president in 16 years, aims to deepen bilateral ties and expand cooperation across multiple economic sectors.

A Historic Diplomatic Milestone

The visit marks a significant milestone in China-Slovakia relations, which date back to October 1949 when Czechoslovakia became one of the first countries to recognize the newly established People’s Republic of China. After Slovakia’s peaceful separation from Czechoslovakia in 1993, the two countries established diplomatic relations on January 1 of that year.

Relations were elevated to a Strategic Partnership in November 2024 during Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico’s official visit to China, setting the stage for Pellegrini’s state visit. The visit follows a broader push by Bratislava to diversify its international partnerships, with Pellegrini having previously traveled to India, Turkey, and Azerbaijan since taking office.

Key Meetings and Agenda

During his three-day visit, President Pellegrini will hold talks with President Xi Jinping, with both leaders expected to discuss bilateral relations, international and regional issues, and chart the future course of China-Slovakia ties. Premier Li Qiang and National People’s Congress Chairman Zhao Leji will also meet with the Slovak president separately.

According to People’s Daily, the discussions will focus on strengthening political mutual trust, aligning development strategies, and expanding cooperation in high-value-added investments, science and research, transport, logistics, industry, agriculture, and tourism. The Belt and Road Initiative and China-Central and Eastern European Countries cooperation framework are also expected to feature prominently in the talks.

Economic Cooperation at the Forefront

While political dialogue is a key component of the visit, economic cooperation is expected to take center stage. Emphasis is to be placed on supporting high-value-added investments and creating new opportunities for Slovak enterprises, with the visit aiming to confirm existing areas of partnership and expand collaboration in science, research, transport, logistics, industry, agriculture, and tourism.

Slovakia, a key Central European economy with a strong automotive and industrial sector, has been seeking to strengthen economic ties with China through the CEEC cooperation platform and the Belt and Road Initiative. The country’s geographic location positions it as a potential transit hub for Chinese goods entering Europe, making it a strategically valuable partner within the broader China-Europe economic corridor.

The visit takes place against the backdrop of complex EU-China dynamics, where European nations increasingly balance economic engagement with China against geopolitical and security considerations. Pellegrini, who was elected president in 2024 succeeding Zuzana Čaputová, has pursued a pragmatic foreign policy that engages both Western and Eastern partners.

Speaking at a regular press briefing on Thursday, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian highlighted the strategic importance of the relationship, stating that “Slovakia is one of the first countries to recognize and establish diplomatic relations with New China, and is an important partner of China in Europe.” According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lin Jian emphasized that under the strategic guidance of President Xi Jinping and Slovak leaders, China-Slovakia relations have maintained high-level operation in recent years, with fruitful cooperation across various fields.

Lin Jian further noted that “China is willing to work with Slovakia to take this visit as an opportunity to continuously deepen traditional friendship and political mutual trust, strengthen development strategy alignment, expand exchanges and cooperation in various fields, promote high-quality Belt and Road cooperation and China-CEEC cooperation, and continuously enrich the connotation of the China-Slovakia strategic partnership.”

The state visit represents an opportunity for both nations to build on the momentum generated by the 2024 strategic partnership agreement.
