Wang earned her PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2019 under the supervision of Larry Guth. Her research spans harmonic analysis, geometric measure theory, and Fourier analysis.

Deng Yu: From Olympiad Gold to Hilbert’s Sixth Problem

Deng Yu, born in June 1989 in Shenzhen, Guangdong, was a child prodigy who won a gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad in 2006 at age 16. He was exempted from China’s rigorous Gaokao examination and admitted to Peking University, where he met Wang Hong as a classmate.

Deng transferred to MIT, earning his bachelor’s degree in 2011, before completing his PhD at Princeton University in 2015 under Alexandru D. Ionescu. His breakthrough work derived the Boltzmann equation from Newtonian particle dynamics, making substantial contributions to Hilbert’s Sixth Problem — one of the 23 major unsolved problems in mathematics proposed by David Hilbert in 1900.

Now a full professor at the University of Chicago, Deng previously held positions at the Courant Institute, the University of Southern California, and the University of Chicago. His awards include a Sloan Research Fellowship (2021), the Oberwolfach Prize (2025), and the Clay Research Award (2026).

The simultaneous recognition of two mathematicians from the same country and the same entering class at Peking University is unprecedented in Fields Medal history.
