AI and Creative Talent Demand Surges in China’s Job Market
China’s job market is undergoing a structural transformation as demand for “composite talent”—professionals who combine creative skills with artificial intelligence expertise—surges across industries. From film production to internet services, companies are scrambling to find workers who can bridge the gap between artistic creation and AI technology, according to a report by CCTV News.
The AI Revolution in Creative Industries
The most visible effects of this shift are playing out in China’s film, television, and short drama production industries, where AI tools are fundamentally reshaping how content is made. AI technology now allows individuals to independently complete work from script to storyboard, visuals to special effects—tasks that previously required entire professional teams.
Production timelines that once stretched months or even years have been compressed to days, with some single-episode short dramas now produced in hours. Meanwhile, special effects and previsualization efficiency has improved three- to tenfold, and production costs can be reduced by a factor of up to 100 compared to traditional methods.
As Xinhua News reports, over 5,000 internet companies released more than 200,000 positions in a month-long recruitment drive launched in July 2026, with AI-related roles growing rapidly. Tencent alone posted over 8,000 openings, while ByteDance offered approximately 7,000 positions spanning AI research to business operations.
New Roles, Unlikely Backgrounds
Perhaps the most striking aspect of this transformation is the emergence of entirely new job categories. Positions such as AI Storyboard Artists, AI Image Generators, AI Editors, and “Card Drawers” (prompt engineers who input text prompts to generate and select usable AI content) are now in high demand.
Workers from non-traditional backgrounds are entering the creative industry through these new roles. Zhang Wenxuan, a graduate in cultural relic restoration, now works as a “card drawer” at a production company. Shi Yilin, who studied landscape design, works as an AI image generator, creating and modifying visual content for film and television.
“It’s really a form of technological democratization,” said Director He Ziqiang, a 20-year veteran of the film industry working in Hengdian, Zhejiang. “Anyone can make their own film as long as you have ideas. This will greatly enrich all artistic creation and vitality.”
Data Confirms the Trend
The numbers behind the trend are compelling. AI editor job postings in June 2026 increased 179% year-on-year, according to Li Qiang, Vice President of recruitment platform Zhilian Zhaopin. Crucially, traditional editor postings also grew 7% during the same period, suggesting that AI is complementing rather than replacing existing roles.
“This shows AI is not a simple replacement relationship—it’s enabling transformation of entire traditional professions,” Li Qiang said.
AI engineer positions for new graduates grew 28.4% year-on-year in the first five months of 2026, while chip engineer postings rose 21.0%. Notably, 21% of AI engineer demand now comes from the high-end equipment and smart manufacturing sectors, according to Zhilian Zhaopin data cited by Xinhua.
Salary ranges for AI film and television positions typically fall between 8,000 and 20,000 RMB per month, depending on capability.
Bridging Creativity and Technology
The industry’s most pressing need is for talent that understands both content creation and AI operations. “What’s most lacking now are composite talents who understand both content creation and AI usage and operation,” said Chen Zhongfu, an AI short drama producer based in Zhengzhou.
Wang Siqi, an AI film creator who founded the “Cloud Creation” team, described the ideal AI director as a “hexagonal warrior”—someone proficient in writing, directing, shooting, editing, aesthetics, and AI technology simultaneously.
Universities are responding to the demand. Zhengzhou Normal University has trained 300 to 400 students in AI short drama and micro-drama production since 2025. China’s 2026 undergraduate program directory formally established an “Interdisciplinary” category with 15 new programs, including embodied intelligence and brain-machine science, reflecting the government’s push to integrate AI education across disciplines.
A Broader Structural Shift
This phenomenon reflects a wider transformation in China’s labor market, where nearly 50 new “human-machine collaboration” job categories have been identified across the platform economy. These include AI recruitment assistants, AI real estate agents, generative AI animators, and AI digital human developers.
Chen Xiaoyu, a film director turned AI creator, offered a measured perspective: “AI can quickly generate an image, but whether that image has true expression and substance depends on the creator’s daily observation, thinking, experience, and reading of the world.”
As the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 projected, AI is expected to create 170 million new jobs globally while displacing 92 million—a net gain of 78 million. China’s experience, accelerated by government-led digital transformation initiatives, suggests the country is at the forefront of navigating this transition.
What to Watch For
Looking ahead, expect continued growth in AI-composite job categories, more university programs adapting curricula to industry needs, and potential government intervention to formalize professional certifications. Competition for top talent is likely to intensify, driving up compensation in specialized roles. The AI film and television production model that is reshaping China’s creative industries today may soon expand into other sectors, further accelerating the demand for workers who can straddle the worlds of creativity and code.
