Deerbrook Mall Shooting: 2 Injured, Juvenile Detained
HUMBLE, Texas — A shooting at Deerbrook Mall in Humble, a suburb north of Houston, left two people injured and a juvenile suspect detained on Saturday evening, according to local authorities. Law enforcement secured the scene within minutes, confirming there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The incident unfolded around 6:30 p.m. CDT on the second floor of the mall near the Foot Locker store and the food court. Humble Police Chief Kris Battenfield said an altercation between juveniles escalated to gunfire, with at least four shots fired.
According to Fox News, a juvenile victim was shot and transported to the hospital, where they underwent surgery. Their condition remains unknown. A second victim, an adult bystander, sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the finger.
A juvenile suspect was detained in connection with the shooting. Authorities have stated they believe they have everyone involved and are not searching for additional suspects.
Rapid Response
Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene, including the Humble Police Department, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, and Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office. Chief Battenfield confirmed that three on-duty officers were already stationed at the mall at the time of the incident, enabling an immediate response that contained the situation rapidly.
As KPRC Click2Houston reported, the mall was placed on lockdown and stores were evacuated as law enforcement swept the building to ensure it was secure.
“We are being told there is also a third party that may have been struck by a gunshot in the finger, with non-life threatening injuries there,” Chief Battenfield said during a press conference held after 8 p.m.
Witness Angela Arriaga, who was shopping with her family at the Journey store, described the terrifying moments to ABC13. “Everybody went to the back of the store to the exit, and my husband stayed at the front, trying to make sure everybody was safe. He even shut the gates of the Journey store,” she said. Her daughter was trying on shoes when the shots rang out and fled toward safety with only one shoe on. “It was just the scariest,” Arriaga added.
FOX 26 Houston identified the adult bystander as Gerald Huston, a social media influencer and comedian with approximately 2 million Instagram followers, who posted about the incident confirming he was the individual struck in the finger.
Broader Context: Teen Takeovers and Mall Security
The shooting has reignited concerns over what authorities and local media describe as “teen takeovers” at Houston-area shopping centers — large, unsanctioned gatherings of minors organized via social media that have sometimes led to disruptions and violence. Memorial City Mall recently implemented a temporary youth curfew, and Willowbrook Mall previously required minors under 17 to be accompanied by an adult during certain hours.
When asked whether unsupervised teens at the mall could be a root cause, Humble Police said that question and any potential solutions would need to be addressed by mall owners or managers. Authorities said it was too soon to determine whether Deerbrook Mall would take measures to restrict gatherings of minors. Chief Battenfield noted that the current mall policy allows minors to be present inside the mall without adult supervision.
Investigation Ongoing
The investigation remains active, with authorities reviewing witness statements and surveillance footage. Officials have not disclosed what led to the altercation, what charges the detained juvenile may face, or the current condition of the juvenile victim who was taken into surgery. As the community processes the incident, the shooting underscores broader challenges facing shopping centers nationwide in maintaining public safety while remaining welcoming community spaces.
