What Is a Heat Dome?

The current crisis is driven by a heat dome—a meteorological phenomenon in which a strong ridge of high pressure acts like a lid, trapping hot air beneath it and preventing it from rising and cooling. According to the Associated Press, this creates a self-reinforcing cycle producing sustained extreme temperatures with little overnight relief, allowing heat stress to accumulate dangerously over time.

Current Conditions

Temperatures are running 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit (5.6 to 8.3 degrees Celsius) above normal across a region spanning from Dallas to North Dakota. Western Nebraska is under an extreme heat warning with forecasts of 108°F (42°C), while Las Vegas is approaching record-breaking highs near 114°F (45°C). The Denver area could see record temperatures, and even normally moderate areas of Montana and Wyoming are expected to top 100°F (37°C).

“It looks like it is going to be pretty much stationary in that position as we go through the week,” said Bob Oravec, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

The heat dome is forecast to shift somewhat through the week, with the most severe conditions moving toward Texas and the Gulf Coast by Wednesday, July 29. Some areas will be spared: the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, and much of the Pacific Northwest are expected to avoid the extreme heat.

Life Under the Heat Dome

For those living and working in the affected regions, the conditions are taking a heavy toll. In Las Vegas, HVAC repair technician Kristian “Flaco” Santos spent hours climbing onto rooftops and into attics where temperatures can be 15 degrees warmer than the outside air.

“It is brutal,” Santos said. “I’m not Superman, but I do, I do take care of myself when I’m in the heat. You want to get home to your family safe.”

In Chadron, Nebraska, near the Museum of the Fur Trade, business has been unusually slow. “I’m sure no one would be willing to wear it on a day like this,” said museum employee Hannah Lovelace, referring to the fur hats in the gift shop.

Part of a Broader Heat Wave

This heat dome represents the second major phase of the 2026 North American heat wave, which began on June 28. The first phase hit the eastern United States and eastern Canada with devastating force, placing roughly 180 million people under extreme heat risk. At least 44 heat-related deaths were reported during that period, and communities across the Northeast were forced to cancel Independence Day celebrations—the nation’s 250th anniversary.

That initial heat dome was broken by severe thunderstorms from July 4 to 6, which caused more than 1.3 million power outages, as the Boston Globe reported. Almost immediately, a second heat dome began forming over the western and central United States. By July 12, multiple all-time temperature records had been shattered: Miles City, Montana reached 115°F (46°C); Sheridan, Wyoming hit 109°F (43°C); and Salt Lake City, Utah recorded 109°F (43°C).

The Climate Connection

Scientists say the extreme weather is consistent with decades-old climate projections. Andy Pershing, chief program officer at Climate Central, a climate change communications nonprofit, explained that rising carbon dioxide levels from burning fossil fuels make hotter weather more frequent and severe.

“We are experiencing exactly what the climate models in the 1990s said we should experience now,” Pershing said. “That is more frequent, more severe heat waves, bigger temperature anomalies, more humidity, higher overnight temperatures. These are all part and parcel of the climate story.”

The continental United States experienced its second-hottest first half of the year on record in 2026. The presence of El Niño conditions, declared by the National Weather Service on June 11, is amplifying the effects of human-caused climate change, making heat waves more likely and more intense.

What to Watch For

Authorities are warning that this heat dome poses serious health risks, particularly for children, older adults, and people with medical conditions who are at heightened risk of heat stroke. Communities are adapting: the Indianapolis Motor Speedway will allow packed coolers and provide water refill stations for the Brickyard 400, while Denver recreation centers are opening cooling areas.

Looking ahead, the worst of the heat is expected to shift toward Texas and the Gulf Coast by midweek. Some relief may arrive toward next weekend, though forecasters caution that even that may be temporary. Key concerns in the coming weeks include the strain on regional power grids, potential impacts on agriculture across the Great Plains, and the elevated risk of wildfires in the already drought-parched West.

As the planet continues to warm, events like this heat dome are becoming not just more frequent but more severe—a reality that climate scientists have been warning about for decades and that millions of Americans are now experiencing firsthand.
