Jeffries Kicks Off 100-Day Affordability Push

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Sunday launched the “Fighting for an Affordable America” agenda in battleground Pennsylvania, kicking off a 100-day sprint to the November midterm elections with a focused message on lowering costs for American families. Speaking in Pennsylvania’s 7th Congressional District in the Lehigh Valley, Jeffries was joined by Gov. Josh Shapiro to rally support for Democratic challenger Bob Brooks, as the party seeks to flip the narrowly divided House, according to AP News.

“Making clear to the American people that we’re focused on lowering the cost of groceries and gas and housing, we’re committed to a country that provides affordable health care for every American,” Jeffries said.

The event marked the beginning of the Democratic Party’s “100 Days Out Weekend of Action,” which will feature more than 400 grassroots events across competitive states nationwide.

A Key Battleground in a Narrowly Divided House

Pennsylvania’s 7th District represents the kind of swing seat that will determine control of the House, where Republicans currently hold a narrow majority. Fewer than 20 seats nationwide are considered genuine toss-ups, and PA-07 is among the most closely watched, along with Pennsylvania’s 1st, 8th, and 10th districts.

Freshman GOP Rep. Ryan Mackenzie, who won the seat in 2024 by a razor-thin 1-point margin, held his own “100-day out” event in the same district on Sunday. President Donald Trump visited a Mack Truck plant in the district last month to endorse Mackenzie, declaring, “We gotta win the midterms.”

Challenger Bob Brooks, a retired firefighter and union leader who serves as president of the Pennsylvania Professional Fire Fighters Association, emerged from the Democratic primary in May with a roughly 20-point margin of victory. He has positioned himself as a working-class champion in a district where Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro previously won by more than 12 points.

The Affordability Message

Jeffries’ agenda focuses squarely on kitchen-table economics — an attempt to shift the national conversation toward voter frustration with high prices. In an interview on CNN’s State of the Union aired Sunday, Jeffries elaborated on the party’s message, according to the official transcript.

“Too many people are working hard, they’re playing by the rules, but they can’t thrive and they can barely survive,” Jeffries told CNN’s Dana Bash. “Not enough food on the table, not enough gas in the tank, unable to actually regularly and consistently afford to pay the rent or pay the mortgage.”

The Democratic leader directly tied rising costs to the Trump administration’s policies, calling for an end to the “reckless and costly war of choice” with Iran that he said has “skyrocketed gas prices on everyday Americans.” He also opposed Trump’s tariffs, arguing they have “increased costs on everyday Americans by thousands of dollars per year.”

Historical Headwinds and Strategic Calculations

Midterm elections historically punish the president’s party, with an average loss of approximately 28 House seats since World War II. With Trump in his second term and that trend firmly established, Democrats are betting that economic discontent will outweigh other issues where Republicans hold advantages, such as border security and cultural debates.

President Trump’s signature legislative achievement, the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” — a package of tax breaks and spending cuts — is a centerpiece of the GOP’s case to voters. House Speaker Mike Johnson is preparing a cross-country fundraising tour to support Republican candidates as the party works to preserve its majority.

A June 2026 Supreme Court ruling has added a new variable to the campaign finance landscape, now allowing national party committees to make direct, unlimited contributions to candidate campaigns — a development that could reshape spending dynamics as Republicans currently hold a cash advantage.

The Battle Ahead

With 100 days until the polls close, both parties are barreling toward a November election that will determine control of the 119th Congress. Democrats are betting that a relentless focus on affordability — grocery prices, gas, housing, and healthcare — can overcome the GOP’s financial edge and the historical gravity of midterm losses for the president’s party.

Pennsylvania’s 7th District will serve as a critical bellwether. The race between Brooks and Mackenzie, unfolding against the backdrop of Trump’s second term, the Iran conflict, and persistent economic anxiety, encapsulates the national stakes.
