Sombreffe Rook Colony Pushes Residents to Breaking Point
Residents of Sombreffe, a small town in Belgium’s Namur province, are at their wit’s end. For more than 15 years, a booming colony of rooks (Corvus frugilegus) nesting in the tall trees of the Château de Sombreffe has subjected locals to relentless noise, corrosive droppings, and chimney blockages. As reported by RTBF, the municipality has now launched an online questionnaire to formally document the scale of the nuisance and push for regulatory action.
A Colony Out of Control
The rook colony began modestly around 2000–2003 with roughly 50 individuals. It has since swelled to several hundred birds. What was once a minor inconvenience has become a daily ordeal for those living near the château.
Xavier de Wouters, a long-time resident, describes the noise as unbearable. “The most significant nuisance is the noise,” he told RTBF. “During the June heatwave, we had to close our windows at 4 a.m. when they woke up. Because of the noise. It’s shrill.” The droppings are equally destructive, with de Wouters noting that his daughter’s roof has turned white from acidic bird excrement.
Complaints date back to at least 2009, when Dr. J.P. Siméon first documented the issue. Despite multiple petitions, derogation requests, and even tree-cutting operations over the years, the colony has continued to grow and spread to surrounding villages. A citizen collective formed in 2018 sent letters to all political candidates ahead of municipal elections, demanding action — but meaningful relief has yet to arrive.
A Protected Species, A Complicated Problem
The rook is protected under the European Birds Directive (2009/147/EC), which makes lethal control extremely difficult. Derogations can be granted by Wallonia’s Department of Nature and Forestry (DNF), but they are, as the research notes, “very complicated” to obtain. And even when authorized, destruction may be counterproductive.
“Systematic destruction is not a short-term solution because vacated territories are quickly recolonized,” explains Julie Tessier, Sombreffe’s échevine (alderman) for Environment and Animal Welfare.
The broader trends are stark. Belgium’s rook population has surged from 8,700 nests in 1928 to approximately 24,000 nests in 2013–2018, with the vast majority concentrated in Wallonia. As Anne Weiserbs, an ornithologist with Natagora, notes in the RTBF report, the cessation of persecution and the birds’ adaptation to human-modified landscapes have driven this explosion.
What Can Be Done?
The municipality’s new online form, announced on the commune’s official website, invites residents to report specific nuisances. The goal is to centralize data, re-establish contact with the DNF, and build a stronger case for regulatory evolution.
But concrete solutions remain elusive. Bird-scaring devices require constant maintenance and birds quickly habituate. Tree cutting is expensive and temporary. Lethal control may even backfire by stimulating recolonization.
Weiserbs advocates for landscape management as the most sustainable approach. “By letting the grass grow above calf height, you make the landscape less attractive for corvids and prevent high densities of birds,” she explains. This approach requires widespread adoption, however, and offers little immediate comfort to residents suffering today.
The commune is also experimenting with natural predation, installing a nest on the town’s water tower to attract falcons. But Weiserbs is skeptical: “There is no raptor specialized on corvids. Hoping to reduce rook populations by attracting raptors near a colony is very unlikely.”
A Growing Challenge Across Wallonia
Sombreffe is not alone. The nearby town of Thuin faces a similar crisis, and agricultural damage from corvids across Wallonia has become a significant economic concern. As biodiversity advisor Didier Vieuxtemps has noted, farmers feel increasingly helpless. The scale of the problem shows no signs of diminishing.
The fundamental tension is clear: biodiversity conservation versus residential quality of life. Rooks are a native species making a remarkable comeback, but when their colonies establish in the heart of human settlements, the consequences are real and daily.
What’s Next?
For now, the online form offers data collection rather than immediate relief. In the medium term, it may pressure Walloon authorities to revise derogation procedures or reclassify rooks under the ESOD (species causing damage) framework, which would allow more flexible control. Longer term, the growing corvid population in human-dominated landscapes appears unlikely to reverse on its own — requiring a combination of prevention, tolerance, and targeted intervention.
As Weiserbs puts it, “There is no miracle solution, unfortunately. It’s a complicated situation.” For the residents of Sombreffe, that complexity offers little comfort at 4 a.m.
