Beijing Deploys 72 Robots at Parks in Smart Management Push
Beijing is rolling out 72 robots across 14 municipal parks by the end of July 2026, marking a significant expansion of robotics in public urban spaces as part of China’s broader smart city drive. The robots will handle cleaning, security patrols, visitor guidance, water rescue, maintenance, and ecological monitoring at some of the capital’s most iconic landmarks, including the Summer Palace and the Temple of Heaven.
From Pilot to Citywide Deployment
The initiative did not emerge overnight. In September 2024, during the World Robot Conference, Beijing’s Economic and Information Technology Bureau, the Municipal Landscaping and Greening Bureau, and the Park Management Center established the city’s first “Robot + Garden” pilot program at Yuyuantan Park. The following year, Yuyuantan Park opened a dedicated “Garden Robot Workstation” for testing and training.
By mid-2026, 18 companies had completed trials of 23 different robot models at the site, laying the groundwork for the citywide expansion now underway.
According to Beijing Youth Daily, the Beijing Park Management Center announced the full rollout on July 23, with all 72 robots expected to be fully operational before the end of the month.
Six Operational Scenarios
The robots cover six distinct areas of park management:
Cleaning and Maintenance: Sweeping robots equipped with large-model AI can autonomously navigate paths, adjust cleaning strategies based on trash distribution, and return to charging stations independently. Water surface cleaning robots patrol ponds and lakes, collecting floating debris such as leaves and plastic bottles, while underwater weed-cutting robots manage aquatic vegetation.
Smart Patrol: AI-powered patrol robots can identify more than ten types of uncivilized behavior, including smoking and bringing pets into restricted areas. These robots also monitor plant diseases, track biodiversity, and detect facility faults. L4 autonomous patrol vehicles conduct environmental and safety inspections across park grounds.
Visitor Services: Inquiry and guidance robots use voice recognition, semantic understanding, and integrated knowledge bases to provide visitors with route directions and park information. At the Temple of Heaven, sweeping robots have already become a “star” attraction, with children curiously circling them as the robots respond with friendly blinking signals.
Water Rescue: Remotely operated rescue boats provide rapid emergency response capabilities for park lakes and waterways, improving safety for visitors.
Greening and Pest Control: Internet-connected pest monitoring lamps automatically trap and image insects, analyzing data to support targeted pest management.
Ecological Monitoring: AI bird recognition systems can identify more than 1,200 bird species through sound and image analysis, supporting biodiversity research and conservation efforts.
Data-Driven Management
Zhou Ziniu, Deputy Director of the Science and Technology Information Department at the Beijing Park Management Center, emphasized the data-driven nature of the program. “We will coordinate the collection of robot operation data from all municipal parks, strengthen data monitoring, achieve real-time monitoring of operational status, precise positioning, and multi-dimensional statistical analysis,” Zhou said, as reported by People’s Daily. “This will provide scientific support for the deepening application and expansion of robots in garden scenarios.”
The parks involved in the rollout — including the Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven, Beihai Park, Taoranting Park, Yuyuantan Park, and the Luxian Ancient City Site Park — represent a cross-section of Beijing’s cultural heritage and modern public spaces. Several are UNESCO World Heritage sites, making the integration of advanced robotics with historic landscapes a particularly delicate and noteworthy undertaking.
Broader Implications
The deployment reflects China’s broader push under the “new quality productive forces” (新质生产力) framework to apply advanced technology across public services. The six-scenario system positions this as a comprehensive smart management solution rather than a narrow automation project.
Notably, officials have framed the robots as augmenting rather than replacing human workers. The initiative is described as reducing labor intensity for frontline staff and improving safety, particularly in tasks such as cleaning and water rescue. However, specific details about workforce adjustments and the total budget for the project have not been disclosed.
The participation of 18 domestic robotics companies in the trial phase suggests a mature ecosystem of Chinese robotics firms ready to scale their solutions for urban applications.
