Rand Paul Releases Fauci Diaries, Reigniting Lab-Leak Debate

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) has released more than 1,100 pages of Dr. Anthony Fauci’s pandemic-era diary notes, reigniting the long-running debate over the origins of COVID-19 and the lab-leak theory. The release, published by the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee chairman over the weekend of July 25-26, comes just days before Fauci is scheduled to testify under subpoena before Paul’s committee on July 29.

The Diary Release

Paul’s office published a 1,141-page PDF containing Fauci’s typewritten diary entries spanning December 2019 through December 2022 — covering the period from just before the pandemic was declared to when Fauci stepped down as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). The document was briefly taken down Monday evening and reposted Tuesday morning with redactions, according to NPR.

Paul wrote on X that the diary entries reveal a discrepancy between what Fauci said publicly and what he wrote privately. “What [Fauci] wrote privately and what he told the country are two different stories,” Paul said, as reported by CBS News. Fauci declined to comment to both CBS News and NPR about the release.

Early Uncertainty on Virus Origins

The diary entries shed new light on Fauci’s private thinking during the early days of the pandemic. In a January 26, 2020 entry, Fauci wrote that “the first infection was in early December and was not connected to the market. Now we know the market was not the source, it was the amplifier.” He added, however, that “somewhere the virus jumped from animals to humans.”

Perhaps most significantly, a February 1, 2020 entry describes a conference call with 12 researchers debating the origins of SARS-CoV-2. According to Fauci’s notes, only two scientists voiced support for a natural origin. “The rest felt that deliberate insertion was possible,” Fauci wrote, referring to the hypothesis that the virus was engineered in a lab.

Paul has seized on this entry as evidence that Fauci privately acknowledged the lab-leak theory’s credibility while publicly dismissing it. “Dr. Fauci’s own diary, in his own words, shows he knew the lab leak theory was credible from the very first weeks of the pandemic,” Paul said in a statement reported by OANN.

Evolving Science vs. Fixed Narratives

Virologists caution that early scientific uncertainty does not constitute evidence of a cover-up. Dr. Felicia Goodrum, a virologist at Dartmouth College, told NPR that science is inherently iterative. “We make the best conclusions we have with the data we have at the time, but then you’re going to keep working, and then you’re going to ultimately revise the original conclusions,” she said. “That’s absolutely fundamental to the way science is done.”

The consensus among most virologists has since shifted toward the natural spillover theory. Dr. Robert Garry of Tulane University told NPR that there is “no actual evidence” for the lab-leak theory, noting that no lab possessed a precursor virus similar enough to SARS-CoV-2 to engineer the pandemic pathogen. A February 2024 survey by the Global Catastrophic Risk Institute found that most scientists in the virology community still support the natural origin hypothesis.

Fame and Relationship with Trump

Beyond the origins debate, the diaries reveal Fauci’s private reflections on his sudden rise to fame and his complex relationship with President Donald Trump. In a May 21, 2020 entry, Fauci wrote that his “national and international fame is explosive and really unimaginable,” adding that “POTUS seems to be enamored of me even though I am taking the spotlight away from him.”

According to CBS News, Fauci’s entries describe both productive interactions and growing tensions with Trump. He recorded Trump pulling him aside before the Operation Warp Speed announcement and saying, “Tony, you are losing me trillions of f***ing dollars,” while later seeking reassurance that they were still on good terms. By August 2020, Fauci referred to Trump as an “idiot” for posting inaccurate COVID-19 death figures.

Paul condemned Fauci’s focus on media attention. “While Americans buried loved ones, Anthony Fauci was counting headlines that doted over him. Absolutely vile,” Paul said, per OANN.

The Long-Running Feud with Paul

The diary entries also chronicle Fauci’s combative relationship with Paul. In a July 20, 2021 entry, Fauci recounted a Senate hearing in which he clashed with Paul over whether the NIH had funded gain-of-function research in Wuhan. “I finished by looking him in the eye and telling him that if anybody is lying here it is he,” Fauci wrote, as reported by CBS News.

On August 24, 2021, Fauci described congressional inquiries into COVID-19 origins as a “waste of time,” writing: “More conspiracy theory like letters keep coming in from congressmen and senators trying to link us to the origin of COVID-19.”

What’s Next

Fauci is scheduled to testify before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on Wednesday, July 29. The hearing is expected to be highly contentious, with Paul likely to press Fauci on the apparent discrepancies between his private diary entries and his public statements on the virus’s origins.

The release has also raised ethical and legal questions, as Paul’s office has not disclosed how it obtained Fauci’s private diary. The debate over COVID-19 origins — whether natural spillover or lab leak — continues to divide scientists, policymakers, and the public, with no definitive resolution in sight.
