Michigan Father Kills Wife, 6 Children in Deadly Family Annihilation
A Michigan man fatally shot his wife and six children before setting their home on fire and taking his own life, in what authorities are calling one of the worst domestic violence incidents in the state’s history. The tragedy unfolded in Grand Haven Township, a community of approximately 18,000 residents on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan.
Kristopher “Kris” Karolkiewicz, 47, killed his wife Amanda “Mandy” Karolkiewicz, 39, and their six children — four biological sons ages 5, 11, 12, and 15, along with two adopted 11-year-old daughters — according to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office. All eight victims died from gunshot wounds, confirmed by autopsies conducted at Corewell Health–Blodgett.
The Discovery
First responders were initially called to the area around 8:30 a.m. on Friday, July 24, after neighbors reported the smell of smoke, but were unable to locate its source. At approximately 11:42 a.m., firefighters returned to the Karolkiewicz home on Riverside Trail after receiving reports of “white smoke showing,” according to Capt. Jake Sparks of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.
Upon entering the residence, firefighters discovered the eight bodies in different bedrooms throughout the house. The fire had been intentionally set in multiple locations within the home, with significant damage concentrated in the basement, Sparks said. Family pets — several dogs and at least one cat — also died in the blaze. Authorities confirmed that the fire was started after the murders.
Sparks noted that violence may have begun as early as the night of July 23 and carried into Friday morning, as there had been earlier reports of a smoky smell in the area. The weapon used was a registered handgun, though authorities have not confirmed whether it was recovered from the fire-damaged residence.
The Victims
Amanda Karolkiewicz was a well-regarded substitute teacher and paraprofessional at Peach Plains Elementary in the Grand Haven Area Public Schools district. Earlier this year, the district formally recognized her as a “Premier Substitute Teacher,” noting that she “goes above and beyond for students, especially when they’re having a hard day” and responds with “empathy, patience, and care.” She was also a published children’s book author under the pen name Mandy Karol, with a passion for “special needs and trauma-informed advocacy, mindfulness, reading, dining out, traveling, and exploring the Lake Michigan shoreline,” according to local reporting.
Her parents, Steve and Becky Lawwill, issued a statement expressing their devastation: “Our daughter Mandy was a kind and devoted soul who loved her family and her students. We treasured every moment we had with her and her six children, and words cannot adequately express our devastation.”
Investigation and Motive
Capt. Sparks described the incident as “an unspeakable tragedy that we may never completely understand why it happened. But we’ll do our best to find the answers and to honor the memory of those victims.”
According to The Guardian, the killings fit the definition of a family annihilation — a type of crime most commonly committed by an armed male against multiple close family members. This incident marks at least the eighth such family annihilation in the United States in 2026, according to the non-partisan Gun Violence Archive.
Investigators from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police Fire Investigation Unit, and a state police dog team are working jointly to determine the motive. Sparks stated, “We’re trying to get answers for the family. We’re trying to get answers for the community. We’re trying to get answers for our own responders.”
Community Response
The Grand Haven community has been deeply affected by the loss. A prayer vigil was held on Monday, July 27, at St. Patrick Church in Grand Haven, where dozens gathered to mourn. Grand Haven Area Public Schools Superintendent Kristin Perkowski said in a letter to families: “Regardless of the details that may emerge, this is a devastating incident and a tragic loss for our community. Our team is preparing to deploy support for those who may need it.”
A GoFundMe campaign established by Amanda’s family aims to cover legal expenses, with any remaining funds designated for a scholarship in the children’s memory.
