Molenbeek: Gunfire and Molotov Cocktail Strike Same Street

One person was injured by gunfire late Monday evening on Quai de l’Industrie in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, Brussels, with a Molotov cocktail thrown against a residence on the same street just hours later, according to local authorities. Background: A Wave of Violence

The July 27-28 incidents are the latest in a rapid succession of shootings that have rattled Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, a densely populated municipality of approximately 98,000 residents in western Brussels. According to RTBF, the violence began on the night of July 17-18 with a fatal shooting on Rue du Cheval Noir, where a man reportedly involved in drug trafficking was killed. On July 23-24, gunfire erupted on Avenue du Roovere, where military-grade ammunition was found at the scene, though no injuries were reported. Just two days later, on July 25, a person was shot in the leg on Rue Heyvaert — a street adjacent to Quai de l’Industrie.

The Two Incidents

Police were called to Quai de l’Industrie late Monday evening, July 27, following reports of a shooting. Officers discovered one person injured at the scene. The victim was transported to hospital and is no longer in life-threatening danger, as L’Avenir reported. The Brussels public prosecutor’s office opened an investigation, and a ballistics expert alongside the Federal Judicial Police laboratory were dispatched to the scene.

Just hours later, in the early hours of Tuesday, July 28, police were called back to the same street after a Molotov cocktail was thrown against the facade of a residence. The fire was quickly contained and caused no injuries, according to the Brussels-West police zone, which covers Jette, Ganshoren, Koekelberg, Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, and Berchem-Sainte-Agathe. A separate investigation has been opened for this incident.

Police have stated they will not provide further comments “in the interest of the ongoing investigations.”

Drug Trafficking Link

Multiple sources attribute the escalating violence to drug trafficking. Brussels public prosecutor Julien Moinil has characterized the violence as linked to the drug trade, and the Heyvaert-Abattoirs district where these incidents are concentrated is a known hub for drug dealing and organized crime. The discovery of military-grade ammunition in the July 23-24 shooting has raised particular concern about the weaponry available to criminal groups in the area.

Residents Demand Action

The wave of violence has pushed residents to the breaking point. In an open letter to Acting Mayor Saliha Raiss, a local resident wrote: “Shots were fired, facades were hit, directly endangering the lives of our children and our families. This armed violence is the direct result of the drug trafficking that is eating away at our neighborhood daily under our eyes.”
