Belgian Solar Team Leads American Solar Challenge

The Innoptus Solar Team from KU Leuven has surged into the overall lead of the Electrek American Solar Challenge, a grueling 2,500-kilometer solar car race across the United States. On Day 4 of the competition, the Belgian team not only secured the top position after a penalty redistribution but extended their advantage through challenging hilly terrain, as reported by Het Laatste Nieuws.

The Race

The Electrek American Solar Challenge spans eight days, covering over 2,500 km from Minneapolis, Minnesota to Amarillo, Texas, crossing eight US states along sections of the Great River Road and the legendary Route 66. Unlike time-based competitions, the ASC is distance-based — teams aim to cover the greatest possible distance within the competition period, adding strategic depth to the engineering challenge.

More than 42 universities registered for the 2026 edition, including global powerhouses such as TU Delft (Netherlands), Stanford, MIT, and Berkeley. The competition features two vehicle classes: Single Occupant Vehicle (SOV), the category in which Innoptus competes, and Multi-Occupant Vehicle (MOV).

The Innoptus Solar Team

The Belgian team is competing in the American Solar Challenge for the first time, but they bring formidable credentials. The Innoptus Solar Team previously became world champions in 2023 at the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge in Australia. Their vehicle, the “Infinite Apollo,” is the team’s 11th-generation solar car, featuring significant modifications for the American competition, including a new high-efficiency solar panel developed in partnership with LONGi and an advanced battery cooling system.

How the Lead Was Won

The team’s trajectory through the competition has been one of steady improvement. After finishing third in the Formula Sun Grand Prix qualifying event at Brainerd International Raceway in Minnesota, the team secured a strong starting position. On Day 1, they finished second behind TU Delft, covering 570 km and finishing just 13 minutes behind the Dutch leaders.

Day 4 proved to be the turning point. A redistribution of penalty kilometers by race organizers saw the Delft team receive additional penalty kilometers, while the Innoptus team — themselves handed a 12-mile penalty for occasionally exceeding speed limits on Route 66 due to an energy surplus — benefited from the recalculation.

Bernhard Klykens (24), Logistics Coordinator for the team, described the dramatic shift: “We started day four of the American Solar Challenge today. We woke up in second place, but were told we could start first. We were very happy about that, but the most important thing is that we extended our lead throughout the day. We hope to maintain this lead in the coming days.”

The team not only held their lead during a challenging ride through hilly terrain but extended their advantage as the day progressed.

Adapting Strategy

Team member Robbe Hollevoet (24) acknowledged that the team’s enthusiasm got the better of them on the open road. “Due to our enthusiasm, we occasionally went over the limit,” he said. “We’re now focusing on efficient and safe driving.”

This strategic pivot reflects the team’s recognition that compliance with race rules is as important as speed in a distance-based competition where penalties can significantly impact standings.

Historical Significance

No European team has ever won the American Solar Challenge. The Innoptus Solar Team’s current lead positions them as serious contenders to make history. Their consistent upward trajectory — from third in qualifying to second on Day 1 and now first on Day 4 — suggests an effective race strategy and strong vehicle reliability.

Marie-Johanna Schillemans (22), Team Manager, had set measured expectations before the race: “Our ultimate goal is of course to successfully participate in the American Solar Challenge, so we’re not getting too carried away by the qualifying results. Still, a strong starting position was important for us and a top-three finish is a nice bonus.”

What’s Next

With four days of racing remaining, the Innoptus Solar Team faces a critical test. TU Delft remains a formidable opponent with extensive experience in solar car racing. Varying weather conditions, terrain changes across the remaining states, and the pressure of maintaining a lead while balancing speed with compliance will all factor into the final result.

The team’s focus on efficient and safe driving, combined with the technical advantages of the Infinite Apollo, gives them a strong foundation. If they can maintain their current trajectory, the Belgian students could achieve what no European team has done before: winning the American Solar Challenge.

The race is expected to conclude on August 1 in Amarillo, Texas, where the final standings will determine whether the Innoptus Solar Team’s gamble on American soil has paid off.
