The Man Behind the Award
Wang Ji, 56, was born in Shanghai in November 1969 and moved to Changde, Hunan as a toddler when his parents relocated for the Third Front construction initiative. A mathematics prodigy, he was admitted to NUDT’s Computer Science department at just 13 or 14 years of age in 1983 — the same year China’s first billion-times supercomputer, the Galaxy-I, was successfully developed at the same institution.
He went on to study under Academician Chen Huowang, the chief software architect of the Galaxy-I, earning his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. By 33, Wang had been promoted to full professor; by 38, he had received the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund. Pioneering High-Trust Software
High-trust software (高可信软件) uses mathematical methods — known as formal methods — to verify software correctness from its underlying logic. As Wang Ji’s colleague Dong Wei, a professor at NUDT, explained: “High-trust software is the ‘doctor of software.’ By performing ‘full-body CT scans’ and precise diagnosis on the software systems of major national equipment, it finds deeply hidden vulnerabilities and risks.”
In 2003, Wang Ji and his mentor Chen Huowang published “High-Trust Software Engineering Technology,” widely considered the first systematic paper in this field in China. It remains highly cited today. Wang Ji also spearheaded the establishment of the China Computer Federation’s Formal Methods Technical Committee, growing the national research community from just a few dozen in 2015 to over 1,000 today.
His work has direct applications in aerospace, military equipment, autonomous systems, and AI reliability. A Life Interrupted
On January 23, 2013, Wang Ji suffered a catastrophic aortic dissection — a life-threatening cardiovascular emergency with a mortality rate of up to 20 percent. He underwent 13 hours of emergency surgery, followed by multiple complications that required bilateral above-knee amputation. Over the next six months, he endured more than 10 surgeries — including seven deep debridement procedures — and spent 147 days in intensive care.
In 2021, he was diagnosed with kidney failure, and he has since undergone over 700 dialysis sessions. As he put it in a remarkably understated analogy: “My body crashed, but I just needed to reboot.”
Triumph Over Adversity
Despite losing both legs, Wang Ji returned to work at NUDT in 2015 using a wheelchair. He went on to serve as the Chief Technical Expert for a National Defense 973 Project — a major national research initiative. After six years of relentless effort, his team developed a comprehensive “toolbox” for software reliability, and the project passed evaluation in 2021. In 2025, this work earned him the First Prize in Military Science and Technology Progress.
His wife, Huang Chun, is the lead designer of the compiler team for the “Tianhe” (天河) supercomputer. Their family was rated as a National Civilized Family. Wang Ji continues to travel for work — he has developed his own method for transferring in and out of vehicles, which he calls the “vaulting horse” technique — and he continues to supervise graduate students using the “whiteboard teaching method” he inherited from his own mentor.
