RTBF Uses AI to Reconstruct 1956 Bois du Cazier Disaster
Belgium’s French-language public broadcaster RTBF has used generative artificial intelligence for the first time to produce a visual reconstruction of the first hours of the Bois du Cazier mining disaster of 8 August 1956, one of the darkest days in the country’s industrial history. The unprecedented six-minute sequence will air in the RTBF television news on 7 August 2026 — the eve of the disaster’s 70th anniversary — before being made available on RTBF Auvio and RTBF Actus.
Context: Belgium’s Deadliest Mining Disaster
On 8 August 1956 at around 8:10 a.m., a fire broke out deep inside the Bois du Cazier coal mine in Marcinelle, near Charleroi, trapping 262 miners. According to the detailed historical account of the catastrophe, it remains the deadliest mining accident in Belgian history. Among the victims were 136 Italians, many of whom had come to Belgium under the bilateral “men against coal” protocol signed on 23 June 1946, which exchanged Italian labour for Belgian coal during the postwar reconstruction.
The fire was triggered by a chain of small errors. A coal wagon, not fully loaded into the cage at level 975, was recalled to the surface; the protruding wagon struck a steel beam, dislodged it and severed electric and hydraulic-oil cables, igniting a blaze that engulfed the shaft within minutes. Rescue efforts continued for weeks, and the final toll was confirmed on 23 August 1956, when rescuer Angelo Berto discovered about 50 men asphyxiated at level 1035 and reportedly cried out, “Tutti cadaveri!” — “They are all dead!” The Bois du Cazier site, now a memorial and museum, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2012.
The AI Reconstruction
No animated images document the events at the bottom of the mine that morning. The RTBF sequence retraces, minute by minute, the mechanics of the disaster: the miners’ descent, the outbreak of the fire, the first rescue attempts and the discovery of survivors.
The broadcaster stresses that the AI-generated images are clearly identified as reconstructions, so that no confusion is possible with authentic archives; even the photos accompanying the RTBF article are labelled as AI-generated. The investigation, writing, directing, editing and narration were all carried out by the RTBF editorial team, with the voice-over performed by the journalist who led the investigation. AI was used strictly as a tool for generating images.
Historical rigor was central to the project. The narrative rests exclusively on authentic archive documents — survivor testimonies, original manuscripts, the inquiry commission report and photographic archives. The editorial work was conducted in close collaboration with the curator of the Bois du Cazier museum, who verified every visual element. No fact or fictional character was added to the story; where sources did not determine a setting, attitude or visual detail, the team used what it describes as a “framed interpretation” consistent with available historical knowledge.
Analysis: AI Meets Collective Memory
RTBF frames the project as an experiment in AI-assisted historical reconstruction, exploring whether such tools can make unfilmable events accessible while upholding principles of transparency, editorial control and source traceability. The clear labelling of generated images is especially significant at a moment when the use of AI in media is under intense scrutiny, and when synthetic content is often indistinguishable from authentic footage.
The timing is no coincidence. The broadcast comes on the eve of the 70th anniversary of the disaster, part of a year of commemorations that also marks the 80th anniversary of the Belgian-Italian protocol. The anniversary year has also brought progress in the long-running effort to honour the dead. Of the 14 victims whose bodies remained unidentified for decades, six have now been identified through DNA analysis following exhumations initiated in 2019 by Michele Cicora, the son of a victim.
