BeiDou Satellite System Completes Full In-Orbit Upgrade

The BeiDou Navigation Satellite System has fully completed its in-orbit upgrade, the China Satellite Navigation Office (CSNO) announced on July 31, a milestone aimed at delivering higher-quality positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) services to users worldwide. The announcement was also reported by China News Service, which quoted the office on July 31.

The office said the system will develop new navigation technologies while ensuring stable operations, with the goal of building a more ubiquitous, integrated and intelligent comprehensive space-time system by 2035.

What the Upgrade Involves

The work was not a new satellite launch but an optimization of existing infrastructure. China Daily reported that the upgrade began in March, with engineers and controllers optimizing the working status of some satellites. Xinhua confirmed the completion and said the adjustments were designed to provide higher-quality services without disrupting stable operations.

A System at Full Strength

BeiDou is one of only four global navigation satellite systems, alongside the United States’ GPS, Russia’s GLONASS and the European Union’s Galileo, according to China Daily. Since 2000, 64 BeiDou satellites, including four experimental ones, have been launched on 47 Long March 3 series rockets from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan province. The system was declared complete in July 2020 and has since provided full-scale global services. The constellation operates in multiple orbit types, and nearly all smartphone users in China rely on BeiDou services daily, according to China Daily.

More than 50 BeiDou satellites are currently in active service. According to Xinhua, the system offers global positioning accuracy better than 10 meters, velocity measurement accuracy better than 0.2 meters per second and timing accuracy within 20 nanoseconds. Its Precise Point Positioning service can achieve horizontal accuracy better than 0.3 meters and vertical accuracy better than 0.6 meters.

Deepening Reach at Home and Abroad

BeiDou’s influence extends well beyond China. By the end of 2024, applications of BeiDou terminal equipment across major Chinese industries totaled nearly 30 million units, and about 288 million smartphones supported BeiDou positioning, Beijing Daily reported. Beijing Daily also noted that the system has become deeply integrated into economic and social development, combining with 5G, artificial intelligence and the internet of things; meter-level positioning and short-message communication have become standard tools in sectors such as power grids and emergency response.

The system’s services and related products have been exported to more than 140 countries and regions, making it an increasingly familiar alternative to GPS in global markets.

The upgrade bolsters China’s position as an independent provider of PNT services, a strategic priority for critical infrastructure such as power grids, finance, transport and emergency response. It also advances the longer-term roadmap outlined by CSNO: a more comprehensive space-time system by 2035, integrating satellite navigation with communication and timing capabilities as a digital foundation for emerging industries such as autonomous driving and the low-altitude economy.
