Xiongan-Shangqiu High-Speed Railway Enters Trial Operation
The Hebei section of the Xiongan-Shangqiu high-speed railway entered trial operation on August 1, bringing the 552-kilometer line a major step closer to opening. Train G55371 departed Xiong’an Station at 7:00 a.m., formally kicking off the final pre-opening testing phase, in which the railway is examined under simulated real-service conditions, CCTV News reported.
A Strategic North-South Link
The Xiongan-Shangqiu railway runs from Xiong’an Station—the terminus of the Beijing-Xiong’an intercity railway—in the north to Shangqiu Station on the Shangqiu-Hefei-Hangzhou high-speed railway in the south. The main line spans 552 kilometers with a design speed of 350 km/h, passing through Hebei, Shandong, and Henan provinces. It is a key component of the Beijing-Hong Kong corridor in China’s “Eight Vertical and Eight Horizontal” high-speed rail network—one of the country’s most strategically important north-south trunk routes.
Southward, the line connects with a series of existing and under-construction railways, including the Shangqiu-Hefei, Hefei-Anqing-Jiujiang, Nanchang-Ganzhou, Ganzhou-Shenzhen, and Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong lines. Together, these links will help form a continuous high-speed corridor from the capital region to Hong Kong.
From Joint Commissioning to Trial Operation
Trial operation is the final pre-opening stage in Chinese high-speed rail practice, following static and dynamic testing and joint commissioning. By simulating official operating conditions, it allows a comprehensive “combat” test of transport organization and equipment status, according to CCTV News. Such trials are a standard step for new Chinese high-speed lines: the section must demonstrate that timetables are workable, equipment is reliable, and staff can respond to emergencies before commercial services begin.
The Hebei section’s trial operation follows 108 days of joint commissioning and testing, the China News Service confirmed. During the trial period, China Railway Beijing Group will conduct timetable parameter testing, fault simulation, emergency rescue drills, and train operation according to the official diagram—checks that will provide the technical basis for the line’s formal opening.
Progress across the wider project has been steady. Full-line pull-through testing began on May 25, when high-speed comprehensive inspection train 55432 departed Shangqiu Station at 5:13 a.m., as Dahe News reported. That phase subjected track, power supply, catenary, and communication systems along the entire route to integrated verification.
Construction of the line formally began in September 2022 under a four-year schedule. In earlier coverage of high-speed rail projects in Shandong, Dazhong News noted that the Xiongan-Shangqiu line was expected to open to traffic around September 2026—a timeline the current testing phase appears to track.
Broader Implications
The railway’s strategic importance extends well beyond the provinces it crosses. As a linchpin of the Beijing-Hong Kong corridor, its completion will strengthen rail connections between the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and central and southern China, improving a trunk artery that links some of the country’s most economically dynamic areas. For travelers, the new route will eventually provide a direct high-speed link from the capital region to Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
The line also serves as a development engine for Xiong’an New Area, the national new district in Hebei, and supports the coordinated development strategy of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. Once operational, it is expected to improve the regional rail network, ease travel for passengers, and promote economic growth along its route—with intermediate cities such as Liaocheng and Heze in western Shandong poised to become important railway hubs.
