WeChat Earthquake Alert Adds User Participation Features
WeChat’s earthquake alert service has launched two new features that transform how users interact with seismic warnings, marking a shift from one-way notification to active community participation in disaster preparedness. The upgrade, announced on August 2, was jointly developed by the China Earthquake Networks Center, CMG National Emergency Broadcasting, and Tencent, according to CCTV News.
From Passive Alerts to Active Participation
The new “Shaking Intensity Aggregation” feature allows users who receive an earthquake alert to report their actual shaking experience through the WeChat earthquake alert mini-program’s alert details page. After confirming their safety, users can pinpoint their location on a map and select the shaking intensity they felt. This data is processed through professional algorithmic rules to create a shaking intensity distribution map, providing the public with a real-time reference for how different regions experienced the earthquake.
“This upgrade builds on WeChat earthquake alert’s millisecond-level alert push and billion-level coverage capabilities, further improving alert information acquisition, shaking feedback, location services, and public participation,” the WeChat official announcement stated, noting that the goal is to make professional earthquake services “closer to the public, integrated into daily life, and accessible.”
The second feature, “Location Update,” enhances the service’s ability to match alerts with users’ actual current locations. Users receive prompts to update their mini-program alert subscription location when their location changes, ensuring earthquake warning information is pushed to match their current activity area. This improves the relevance and practicality of alerts for travelers and commuters.
A Platform Built on National Infrastructure
The WeChat earthquake alert platform operates on top of China’s National Earthquake Intensity Rapid Reporting and Early Warning Project, which was officially completed in July 2024. WeChat integrated authoritative early warning data from the China Earthquake Networks Center in August of that year, launching a public service system structured as “1 national mini-program + 31 provincial mini-programs,” as IT之家 reported.
Since its launch, the platform has issued alerts for more than 700 earthquakes and now counts over 60 million subscribers. The broader earthquake warning public service system has reached a cumulative user scale exceeding 400 million people, according to IT之家’s coverage of the system’s two-year anniversary in July 2026.
Expanding Beyond WeChat
The platform has evolved from “WeChat’s own coverage” to “open ecosystem coverage,” supporting more phone manufacturers and smart terminals to access the same national authoritative warning signal. Huawei, Xiaomi, and vivo have embedded national earthquake warning capabilities directly into their operating systems, creating a multi-channel public alert network that extends beyond any single app.
In May 2026, the system expanded into campus scenarios, connecting to existing school teaching all-in-one machines, electronic class boards, and public large screens through WeChat’s mini-program hardware framework. During an earthquake, the system can forcibly interrupt current applications with full-screen countdown pop-ups and high-volume voice alerts, as IT之家 detailed. The campus warning capability is currently being piloted in Gansu and Liaoning provinces.
The Value of Citizen Seismic Data
The significance of the new user participation features extends beyond convenience. Earthquake intensity and shaking are traditionally estimated through seismic monitoring station data and algorithms. However, users distributed across different regions provide valuable supplementary information about actual ground motion, building responses, and on-the-ground conditions.
“Perhaps someone will take more appropriate avoidance measures because of the information you provide,” the WeChat team noted in its official announcement, emphasizing the community value of user-reported seismic data.
This user-contributed data supports earthquake authorities in actual shaking assessment, intensity evaluation, algorithm optimization, and emergency rescue decision-making. The upgrade represents a broader evolution of earthquake warning from “a single notification to a broader social safety collaboration network,” as CCTV News described it.
