As summer temperatures soar, e-commerce platforms are seeing sustained sales of clothing and bedding marketed with promises like “cool on touch” and “icy and breathable.” But many consumers are finding that their “air-conditioner pants” feel cool for only a few minutes before leaving them drenched in sweat. According to People’s Daily Online, the question on many shoppers’ minds is simple: Do cooling fabrics actually work?

The Science Behind the “Cool”

Cooling fabrics are not “self-cooling” materials. Ji Peng, an associate researcher at Donghua University’s Textile Technology Innovation Center, explains that these fabrics work through material and structural design to transfer heat away from the skin more quickly on contact, or to help sweat evaporate more easily. As Xinhua News reported, consumers often conflate “cooling sensation” with “temperature reduction” — a common misconception.

“For example, metal feels cool because it conducts heat well, but that doesn’t mean it can continuously refrigerate,” Ji told Economic Daily. “Cooling fabric works the same way — it cannot actively generate cold like an air conditioner, and certainly cannot get cooler the more you wear it.”

What the Q-max Standard Really Measures

The primary evaluation metric for cooling fabrics is the “Q-max” (contact cooling coefficient). Under China’s national standard GB/T 35263-2017, a Q-max value of 0.15 or higher qualifies a fabric as having “instant contact cooling performance.” However, experts caution that this number only tells part of the story.

“Q-max measures the instantaneous heat flow peak, reflecting more how cool it feels on first touch, not whether it stays cool throughout the entire wearing period,” Ji explained. A fabric with a high Q-max but poor breathability and moisture-wicking can actually feel hotter over time as sweat accumulates against the skin.

Why Some Cooling Products Stop Working

The durability of cooling effects depends heavily on how the fabric is manufactured. According to China National Radio, there are three main production processes: coating modification, where cooling agents are applied to the fabric surface; fiber-embedded cooling particles, where functional materials are added during the spinning process; and special texture weaving.

Song Lidan, a senior engineer at the China Textile Construction Planning Institute, told CNR that coating-based products show significant degradation after 5-10 home washes. “When a cooling agent or coating is applied to the fabric surface, the effect weakens with use and washing,” Song said. “It’s normal for consumers to notice this — the cooling agent is consumed during use and washing. In contrast, cooling factors added during the spinning process have far better durability.”

Quality Concerns in the Market

Beyond performance issues, regulators have flagged safety problems in the cooling product market. The Shanghai Consumer Protection Commission tested 70 fabric mat samples and found 12 with issues including fiber content mismatches and pH or formaldehyde levels exceeding standards. Most safety violations involved infant and children’s products, as Guangming Online reported.

Consumer complaints are also widespread. A parent from Liaoning Province told CNR that “children’s ice silk cooling shorts” purchased for his child turned out to be ordinary fabric. “You can’t fool consumers with children’s products,” he said. “Discomfort is one thing, but I’m worried this fabric could carry bacteria for my child.”

A Practical Buying Guide

Experts recommend evaluating cooling products on four dimensions:

Check labels and standards. Look for GB/T 35263-2017 references, third-party test reports, and specific Q-max values. Products that only use marketing terms like “ice silk” or “black tech cooling” without supporting data should be treated with caution.

Look for complete test data. A single Q-max value is insufficient. Seek out post-wash Q-max, breathability, and moisture-wicking data. “Long-lasting cooling” claims without wash-durability test data should be viewed skeptically.

Don’t rely on hand-feel. Store air conditioning, hand moisture, and fabric smoothness all affect how cool a fabric feels to the touch. Some fabrics feel cool initially but trap heat during extended wear.

Match the product to the scenario. For outdoor exercise, prioritize moisture-wicking and breathability. For air-conditioned office or home environments, lyocell and gel fibers offer smooth, soft comfort. For children, safety should come first — prefer natural fibers that meet national safety standards.

The Bottom Line

Cooling fabrics provide a genuine but limited benefit: they offer a pleasant initial cooling sensation through passive heat and moisture management. They are not air conditioners in fabric form, and claims like “cools 5°C immediately” or “permanently cool” are exaggerated marketing. As Economic Daily noted, the best summer clothing balances instant cooling with breathability, moisture management, and durability — qualities that no single metric can capture.

For consumers, the takeaway is clear: look beyond the marketing buzzwords, check for verified test data, and choose products that match how and where you’ll actually wear them. The cooling fabric market is growing rapidly — with searches for such products increasing more than eightfold on major e-commerce platforms, according to Beijing Evening News — but informed choices matter more than ever in a market full of inflated promises.
