Poland Defends VNL Title in Thrilling Five-Set Final

World No. 1 Poland rallied from a 1-2 set deficit to defeat the United States 3-2 (25-21, 23-25, 25-27, 25-23, 15-10) in the 2026 FIVB Men’s Volleyball Nations League (VNL) Finals championship match, successfully defending their title at the Ningbo Beilun Sports and Arts Center in Ningbo, China, on August 2. The victory gives Poland their third VNL crown (2023, 2025, 2026), making them the most decorated nation in the competition’s history.

A Historic Achievement

Poland’s triumph marks only the second time a team has won consecutive VNL championships, following Russia’s back-to-back titles in 2018-19. According to Volleyball World, the Polish squad also has one silver and three bronze medals in the competition, giving them seven medals across eight editions of the tournament. The only edition where Poland failed to medal was the inaugural 2018 event.

Under head coach Nikola Grbic, Poland has now won nine consecutive medals in international competitions. The victory extended Poland’s lead in the FIVB World Rankings to 51.72 points over second-placed Italy, as reported by Polsat News.

The Final Showdown

The final was a remake of the 2023 championship match between Poland and the USA, played before nearly 6,000 fans. The first set went Poland’s way 25-21, but the Americans responded by taking the next two sets 25-23 and 27-25 to move within one set of the title. USA’s Matthew Anderson, who injured his ankle in the third set but continued playing, and Jake Hanes were instrumental in the American surge.

With the championship on the line, Poland regrouped in the fourth set. After the score was level at 20-20, outside hitter Tomasz Fornal sparked his team with a series of outstanding serves, and Poland closed out the set 25-23 to force a decisive fifth set.

In the tie-breaker, Poland seized control after the score was tied at 6-6. Five points in a row on setter Marcin Komenda’s serve gave the defending champions a commanding 13-7 lead, and Poland sealed the set 15-10 to complete the comeback. Wilfredo Leon, who started the fifth set in the opposite position, brought in championship point at 14-9.

Poland made fewer unforced errors (29 vs 34) and outperformed the USA in blocks (12-8) and aces (8-4). Kamil Semeniuk led the Polish scorers with 17 points, while Fornal and Leon each added 15. Hanes was the match’s top scorer with 21 points for the USA.

Fornal Named MVP

Tomasz Fornal was honored as the Most Valuable Player of the 2026 VNL, scoring 15 points in the final with five aces. According to ESKA.pl, it was Fornal’s first such significant achievement with the senior national team, and his energy and leadership throughout the tournament proved crucial to Poland’s success.

“It’s hard to describe my feelings right now. So many emotions,” Poland’s Kamil Semeniuk said after the victory, as quoted by Xinhua News. “Everyone gave everything today. I’m proud of our national team, and we deserved this title. I hope the next VNL Finals will be held a little closer to Poland.”

The victory drew congratulations from Poland’s political leadership. Prime Minister Donald Tusk wrote on social media platform X: “Gold in the Nations League for our volleyball players! Apparently Tomasz Fornal’s motivational speech decided it. As if I could hear it. Bravo!” President Karol Nawrocki also praised the team, saying they “showed character, turned the final around, and proved that you never give up fighting.”

Slovenia’s Historic Bronze

Earlier on Sunday, Slovenia claimed their first-ever VNL medal, defeating Japan 3-1 (25-21, 26-28, 25-22, 25-22) in the bronze medal match. According to Kyodo News, it was Slovenia’s fourth appearance in a VNL third-place match after finishing fourth in 2021, 2024, and 2025.

Slovenia’s Rok Mozic, who scored 23 points, was overcome with emotion after the match. “We’ve had a lot of fourth places, and it was very unlucky. Now we are so happy - it’s like gold for us!” he said. Twenty-one-year-old opposite Nik Mujanovic led all scorers with 24 points.

Japan, which entered the finals with a perfect 12-0 preliminary round record, lost in the semifinals to the USA and then fell to Slovenia in the bronze match. Yuji Nishida expressed frustration, saying, “We were a little off at times, and there were makeable plays we didn’t execute.”

What’s Next

Poland’s continued dominance under Grbic positions them as the team to beat heading into the 2027 VNL season and beyond. With the World Championships on the horizon, the question is whether any nation can challenge Poland’s supremacy in international men’s volleyball. The USA, despite their fourth consecutive VNL final loss, demonstrated significant strength by defeating world champions Italy and handing Japan their first loss of the tournament.

As the VNL prepares to move to its next edition, Poland’s place at the top of the sport appears secure - but the margin for error is shrinking, and the competition is only getting stronger.
