Sichuan Quake Swarm Continues with 3.6 Magnitude Quake

A 3.6 magnitude earthquake struck Gao County in Yibin City, Sichuan Province, on August 3, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center. The quake, which registered at a focal depth of 5 kilometers, was the latest in a prolonged seismic sequence that has rattled the region since late June. No casualties or significant damage have been reported.

A Day of Seismic Activity

The 3.6 magnitude event was not an isolated occurrence. The same day began with a more powerful 4.8 magnitude earthquake in the early morning hours, which prompted the China Earthquake Administration (CEA) to activate a Level IV emergency response. According to The Paper, the CEA dispatched field teams from the Sichuan Earthquake Agency to assist local authorities with emergency operations. The 4.8 magnitude quake was felt across multiple cities, including Yibin, Luzhou, and Chengdu, though no casualties, road closures, or infrastructure damage were reported.

A stronger 4.2 magnitude aftershock followed in the early afternoon, as confirmed by CCTV News, with the same epicenter coordinates and focal depth of 5 kilometers. In total, the region experienced at least seven earthquakes above magnitude 3.0 on August 3 alone, including additional events of magnitudes 3.0, 3.3, and 3.4.

An Ongoing Seismic Swarm

The August 3 events are part of a broader seismic sequence that began on June 29, when a 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck the same area, causing 13 minor injuries and displacing 196 residents. Two additional 5.0 magnitude earthquakes followed on July 8, resulting in three minor injuries.

Experts classify this pattern as an “earthquake swarm” rather than a traditional mainshock-aftershock sequence. Dr. Wang Tun, director of the Chengdu High-Tech Disaster Reduction Institute, explained in an interview with Jimu News that “the recent earthquakes in Yibin’s Gao County have similar magnitudes without a clear single main shock, classifying them as an earthquake swarm.”

Geological Context

The seismic activity is associated with the Huaying Mountain fault zone, a significant geological structure in eastern Sichuan. Long Feng, a senior engineer at the Sichuan Earthquake Agency, noted that “from the spatial distribution of the sequence, it is closer to the Huaying Mountain fault zone,” as reported by Sichuan Online.

The region sits at the edge of the North-South Seismic Belt and has recorded earthquakes since at least 1930. According to the China Earthquake Networks Center catalog, 251 earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or above have occurred within 200 kilometers of the epicenter over the past five years. Experts note that the geological setting does not support earthquakes of magnitude 7 or above, and the probability of a major destructive event remains extremely low.

Response and Preparedness

Local authorities have maintained normal operations throughout the seismic sequence. Power, communications, and transportation infrastructure have remained functional, and Wuliangye, the famous liquor company headquartered approximately 24 kilometers from the epicenter, confirmed that production continues normally.

Dr. Wang Tun emphasized that residents should maintain earthquake preparedness awareness regardless of magnitude. “Regardless of earthquake magnitude, one should have appropriate emergency evacuation awareness,” he said. He also noted that improved earthquake-resistant construction standards implemented after the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, combined with enhanced early warning systems, have significantly reduced casualties from seismic events in the region.

Looking Ahead

The earthquake sequence continues to be closely monitored by the China Earthquake Administration and provincial agencies. While the possibility of further earthquakes cannot be ruled out, experts stress that the probability of a magnitude 7 or above event is extremely low given the region’s geological characteristics. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and utilize earthquake early warning systems as the swarm continues.
