Trump Beats Wilson to Win Second Shanghai Masters Title
World number one Judd Trump defeated defending champion Kyren Wilson 11-6 in the final of the 2026 World Snooker Shanghai Masters on Sunday, claiming his second title at the prestigious event and his first trophy of the 2026-27 season. The victory at Shanghai’s Luwan Indoor Stadium avenged Trump’s agonizing 10-9 loss to Wilson in the 2015 final and ended a two-year drought at the tournament he first won in 2024.
A Dominant Start
Trump seized control early, establishing a 7-3 lead after the afternoon session. Breaks of 73, 62, 67, and 55 helped the 36-year-old Englishman win seven of the first ten frames. A pivotal moment came in frame six, when Wilson was leading 66-0 but missed a frame-winning red, allowing Trump to clear with a 67 break and take a 4-2 lead.
“He’s beaten me in the last few finals. It was nice to start the season in that kind of manner and get one over on him,” Trump told the World Snooker Tour. “This tournament is amazing. I love coming to Shanghai. It is the first tournament of the year and it is a bit unknown how you are going to play.”
Wilson’s Fightback Falls Short
Wilson, the world number seven, mounted a spirited response in the evening session, compiling century breaks of 103 in frame 12 and 134 in frame 16. But Trump’s composure under pressure proved decisive, as he repeatedly won tight frames on the colours to keep his opponent at arm’s length. Trump clinched the title on frame 17, securing the £210,000 top prize while Wilson took home £105,000.
“It should really have been 5-5 after the first session. That is how good Judd Trump is,” Wilson said. “If you give him a chance he will punish you and when he smells blood he goes for the kill. I made it too difficult tonight, but I kept fighting.”
A Storied Rivalry
The final added another chapter to one of snooker’s great modern rivalries. The pair have now met 26 times on the World Snooker Tour, with Trump’s victory giving him a 14-12 head-to-head advantage. Wilson had won five of their previous six meetings in finals, including the 2025 Players Championship final, but Trump’s long-format win here marked a significant breakthrough.
For Trump, the victory was especially meaningful given his path to the title. He defeated Barry Hawkins 6-4, whitewashed John Higgins 6-0 in the quarter-finals, and overcame reigning World Champion Wu Yize 10-6 in the semi-finals. Wilson, meanwhile, battled past Ronnie O’Sullivan, Mark Williams, and Zhao Xintong to reach the final.
Chinese Snooker on the Rise
The tournament, which marked its 20th anniversary, showcased the growing strength of Chinese snooker. Wu Yize and Zhao Xintong both reached the semi-finals, while Xiao Guodong earned the highest break award with a 147 maximum break in the round of 16. Trump acknowledged the changing landscape, noting the emergence of a wave of talented Chinese players.
“Wu Yize has the potential to become world number one in the future, and Zhao Xintong could even reach the top of the world rankings this season,” Trump said, as reported by Shanghai Observer via Tencent News. “At the same time, established players like Kyren Wilson and I are still competing hard, proving we remain at the very top tier of this sport.”
Rankings Pressure Looms
Despite the triumph, Trump faces an uphill battle to retain his world number one ranking. Points from the cancelled Saudi Arabia Masters, which he won two years ago, are set to drop off his rolling two-year tally, with his projected end-of-season ranking sitting at sixth. The 36-year-old acknowledged the challenge ahead.
“I think it’s going to be an uphill struggle to keep that number one spot,” Trump told SnookerHQ. “But hopefully come mid-season or the end of the season, I can make sure I’m back there. I love being number one - it’s something that I’m very happy about. But if you are going to drop down the rankings a little bit, it’s always nice to win these big events like the Shanghai Masters.”
What’s Next
Attention now turns to the China Open, which returns to the snooker calendar for the first time since 2019. The event takes place in Taiyuan from August 8-16, replacing the cancelled Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters. Trump will face Thailand’s Noppon Saengkham in the first round, while Wilson will take on Ireland’s Aaron Hill.
As BBC Sport noted, Trump’s victory in Shanghai provides the perfect springboard for the new season. “The last time I won Shanghai I had a great season after that,” he said. “You need to win tournaments like this to test yourself against the best. It was important to get off to a good start. I’ve done that, I just need to do the rest now.”
