Asia Science Camp 2026 Opens in Hong Kong, Uniting Young Scientists from Across the Region

The Asia Science Camp 2026 officially opened on August 3 at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), marking the first time the prestigious annual forum has been hosted in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The week-long event, running through August 8, brings together more than 300 pre-collegiate and university students from nearly 30 countries and regions for plenary lectures, hands-on workshops, and direct engagement with top-tier researchers, according to Xinhua News.

A Milestone for Hong Kong and Regional Science

Hosted by HKU in celebration of its 115th anniversary, ASC 2026 represents a significant milestone for the city’s ambitions in science and higher education. The forum features an exceptional plenary program with four Nobel Laureates — Aaron Ciechanover (Chemistry, 2004), Sir Andre Geim (Physics, 2010), Ferenc Krausz (Physics, 2023), and Sir Gregory Paul Winter (Chemistry, 2018) — alongside Fields Medalist Ngô Bảo Châu (2010), as detailed on the official ASC 2026 website.

Distinguished speakers also include Dennis Lo Yuk-ming, recipient of the Lasker~DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award, and Vivian Yam Wing-wah, who received the L’Oréal-UNESCO Women in Science Award, according to the HKU press release.

The Asian Science Camp traces its origins to the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings. The concept was co-proposed in 2005 by Nobel Laureates Yuan Tseh Lee (Chemistry, 1986) and Masatoshi Koshiba (Physics, 2002), with the inaugural camp held in Taipei in 2007. Since then, the forum has been held 16 times, including the 2019 edition in Shantou, Guangdong — the only previous occasion on the Chinese mainland, as China Daily HK reported.

Opening Ceremony: A Call for Interdisciplinary Collaboration

At the opening ceremony, HKU President Professor Xiang Zhang delivered a powerful message about the role of science in addressing global challenges. Facing geopolitical tensions and climate change, he emphasized that humanity must solve current social problems through interdisciplinary cooperation and work alongside scientists to seek groundbreaking solutions, as China News Service reported.

Zhang encouraged students to embrace scientific challenge and curiosity, noting that science is built on questioning established knowledge. “If our Nobel laureates tell you, ‘this is the way we did it 20 years ago,’ challenge that,” he said, urging students to treat lectures as a starting point rather than an endpoint. He also called on young scientists to “look beyond science,” emphasizing the importance of the humanities and arts: “Work across boundaries. Bring down the silos. That’s what we need for tomorrow’s science.”

Jay Siegel, Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning) of HKU, described the camp as an incredibly important event that “brings young scientists together, gives them a chance to get to know each other, and builds bonds that will ultimately last a lifetime.” He called the event the “seeds of the trees” that will one day form part of Hong Kong’s international talent and higher education hubs.

Young Voices: Inspiration and Cross-Cultural Exchange

For many participants, the opportunity to interact directly with Nobel laureates is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Thai student Natnicha Puttarangsee, 19, a chemistry major, said she was drawn to “the way each scientist thinks about their work and how that leads to something that could change the world.” Rachaya Dachathornvorapol, 18, a medicine major from Thailand, called meeting Nobel laureates “a great opportunity” to “see how they think and develop amazing ideas.”

Saudi Arabian high school students Faisal Alrubaian and Tameem Khan, both 17, expressed similar enthusiasm. Khan described the camp as “super organized” with “a very enthusiastic community,” while Alrubaian noted that the experience extends beyond science: “You get to meet people from other cultures, other cities — you can see different mindsets.”

Vietnam has sent a 10-member delegation of elite students from leading universities and high schools for the gifted, led by Dr. Nguyễn Bích Huyền, a lecturer at the Hanoi University of Science and Technology. According to Voice of Vietnam, Huyền said the trip is “not only a pride when Vietnam’s young generation can stand shoulder to shoulder with the international community, but also helps them shape the future development of world science and expand future cooperation networks.”

Vietnamese student representative Nguyễn Lương Bằng highlighted the value of exchanging ideas with international peers, noting that the opportunity to “absorb new perspectives on scientific topics such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, as well as practical issues in life, brings great motivation for Vietnam’s young representatives,” as reported by Giáo dục & Thời đại.

A Week of Discovery and Collaboration

Beyond the plenary lectures, ASC 2026 offers a rich program of hands-on activities designed to spark curiosity and foster collaboration. Students will participate in workshops ranging from underwater robotics and AI-powered robotic arm challenges to 3D food printing and molecular imaging. The program also includes scientific poster presentations, cultural activities, and an excursion to Ocean Park, providing a well-rounded experience that blends rigorous science with cultural exchange.

ASC 2026 arrives at a pivotal moment for Hong Kong, which is actively working to position itself as a global magnet for international talent and higher education.
