China’s Brain-Computer Interfaces Reconnect Lives
Three quadriplegic clinical trial participants in China are now performing real work tasks—including e-commerce logistics coordination and vending machine backend labeling—using only their thoughts, according to a Xinhua News report published August 3. One patient controlled a virtual chessboard through thought, while the other used a brain-controlled exoskeleton glove to physically move pieces. The patient in Nanchang, a former art teacher, later used the exoskeleton to write “success” with a calligraphy brush.
Southern Metropolis Daily (南都) reported that Zhujiang Hospital in Guangzhou is recruiting quadriplegic patients for free BCI implantation as part of clinical research, offering the potential for patients to control robotic arms, wheelchairs, and computer cursors through thought.

One Ladder Medical participant described the experience: “It’s like controlling a character in a game—I don’t have to think about which direction to move the joystick, I just naturally go where I want. The signal transmission is stable with minimal delay.”
Zhao Zhengtuo, co-founder of Ladder Medical and a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, compared BCI skill acquisition to learning a foreign language: “At first you’re constantly translating in your head, but eventually you can just speak it directly.” He added that the brain’s bandwidth for interacting with the outside world is limited by the physiological limits of our five senses and limbs—a limitation BCI technology aims to transcend.

According to the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), China’s BCI market was approximately 3 billion RMB in 2025 and is projected to reach 10-14 billion RMB by 2030. The sector’s growth is supported by a robust ecosystem of startups, major tech companies, research institutions, and now, a formal standards framework.
As BCI technology continues to mature, experts expect the focus to shift from clinical validation to broader applications in rehabilitation, assistive technology, and eventually, human-machine integration. The national standards taking effect this month provide the regulatory foundation for this expansion.
