China Debuts First AI Model for Ethnic Medicine
China has released “Huazu Bencao” (华族本草), the country’s first artificial intelligence large model dedicated to ethnic medicine, marking a significant step in digitizing traditional minority pharmacopeia for modern drug discovery and healthcare applications. The model was officially unveiled on July 29 during the opening ceremony of the 2026 China-ASEAN Education Exchange Week in Gui’an New Area, Guizhou Province, according to Xinhua News.
A First-of-Its-Kind Platform
The “Huazu Bencao” model is described as China’s first full-chain intelligent platform for ethnic medicine creation, developed by the National Key Laboratory for Discovery and Utilization of Functional Components of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The project was led by Guizhou Medical University in collaboration with Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Shandong University, with participation from East China Normal University, Tibet University, and several other institutions across the country, as China News Service reported.
Simultaneously, the laboratory established five collaborative innovation bases in Yunnan, Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Tibet, and Guizhou, creating a nationwide research network for ethnic medicine development.
Bridging Ancient Knowledge and Modern AI
The model’s knowledge foundation draws on the Karst Medicinal Material Functional Component Library, integrating over 2,000 ancient texts from Miao, Tibetan, Mongolian, Uyghur, and Dai medical traditions. This has enabled the construction of a million-level knowledge graph covering ethnic medicines and natural products, as detailed in the Tibet Science and Technology Department report.
Technically, the model is supported by two foundational AI systems: the “Shuzhi Qihuang” (数智岐黄) traditional Chinese medicine large model and the Qianwen (千问) large model. The Shuzhi Qihuang model, originally developed by East China Normal University and partners, has evolved through multiple versions to cover over 80,000 TCM formulas and 40,000+ components, as documented by East China Normal University.
The platform operates across five dimensions—R&D, quality control, clinical applications, industry, and teaching—covering eight core scenarios. In research and development, it can conduct efficacy component screening, mechanism target analysis, formula compatibility optimization, and new indication discovery. On the industrial side, it supports formulation process upgrades and quality standard improvements, while also serving as an educational tool for ethnic medicine talent training.
Addressing a Long-Standing Challenge
The research team acknowledged that the biggest challenge was the fragmented nature of multi-ethnic medicine data and inconsistent standards across different traditions. Integrating over 2,000 ancient texts and folk prescriptions required extensive standardization work, while maintaining the integrity of traditional medicine theory within AI computational logic.
Chinese Academy of Sciences Academician Chen Kaixian, who serves as director of the National Key Laboratory, emphasized the importance of collaboration: “Facing the complexity of natural medicine research, I hope all bases will fully utilize the ethnic medicine AI large model, strengthen data resource sharing, research platform sharing, and academic exchanges.”
Tang Lei, Party Secretary of Guizhou Medical University and executive director of the laboratory, noted that the university will “link the high-quality research capabilities of universities in regions rich in ethnic medicine resources across the country” to “efficiently promote the transformation of ethnic medicine resource advantages into industrial and developmental advantages.”
Strategic Significance
The release aligns with China’s national strategy for traditional Chinese medicine inheritance, innovation, and development, as well as its broader push for “new quality productive forces.” The model represents a convergence of China’s AI ambitions with its rich traditional medicine heritage, which includes more than 30 ethnic minority groups with systematic medical traditions.
The timing and venue of the release—at the China-ASEAN Education Exchange Week, now in its 18th edition—underscore the international dimension of this initiative. The collaboration with the China-Thailand Joint Institute for Natural Medicine suggests potential for regional cooperation in traditional medicine research, particularly as ASEAN countries explore similar digital transformations of their own traditional medicine systems.
Industry and Regional Impact
The model could significantly shorten drug screening cycles and reduce R&D costs for ethnic medicine-based pharmaceuticals. It supports quality standard upgrades and industrial modernization, moving ethnic medicine from “experience inheritance” to “data-driven” development.
For western China, where many ethnic minority communities reside, the initiative carries particular regional significance. Guizhou’s rich Miao and Dong medicine resources make it a natural hub, and the five collaborative innovation bases could help transform ethnic medicine resource advantages into economic opportunities for these regions.
