Jilin University Marks 80 Years: Far More Than Just Its Size

Jilin University, one of China’s largest comprehensive universities, is preparing to celebrate its 80th anniversary on September 16, 2026, marking eight decades of evolution from a regional training college into a nationally significant institution of higher learning. As Xinhua News reports, the university’s impact extends far beyond its physical footprint, encompassing academic excellence, national contributions, and a distinctive open-campus culture.

A Legacy Rooted in National Service

The university traces its origins to October 5, 1946, when the Chinese Communist Party established the Northeast Administrative College in Harbin to train revolutionary cadres and professionals for the newly liberated Northeast region. According to the university’s official history, it became the first comprehensive university created by the Communist Party of China, later renamed Jilin University in 1958.

The modern Jilin University was formed through the merger of six institutions on June 12, 2000, bringing together the original Jilin University, Jilin University of Technology, Norman Bethune Medical University, Changchun University of Science and Technology, and Changchun Institute of Posts and Telecommunications. The former PLA Quartermaster University was incorporated in August 2004. Each constituent institution carried its own distinguished legacy, from the Bethune Medical School founded in 1939 with the direct participation of Canadian doctor Norman Bethune, to the Changchun Automotive and Tractor College established in 1955 as the “cradle of Chinese automotive talent.”

Scale That Defines a City

Jilin University’s physical scale is legendary. Its campus covers 7,345,800 square meters—more than ten times the area of Beijing’s Forbidden City—spread across six campuses and seven campus areas in Changchun. A popular saying captures the university’s ubiquity: “Beautiful Changchun is located on the campus of Jilin University.” The university currently enrolls 76,353 students, including 42,221 undergraduates, 22,731 master’s students, 9,832 doctoral students, and 1,417 international students, according to the university’s official profile.

But as the university’s anniversary messaging emphasizes, Jilin University is about far more than its size. Its faculty of 6,251 full-time teachers includes 2,502 professors and 15 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering. Twenty disciplines rank in the global top 1% of Essential Science Indicators, with six in the top 1‰ and one—chemistry—in the top 1‱.

The university’s academic strengths span multiple fields. Its vehicle engineering program has produced nearly half of China’s core automotive technical talent and executives. Its archaeology program is nationally renowned, on par with Peking University and Fudan University. Its chemistry program, led by five academicians and supported by two national key laboratories, has made significant contributions to materials science and inorganic synthesis.

An Anniversary Marked by Milestones

The 80th anniversary celebration has been building momentum throughout the year. The university issued its 80th Anniversary Announcement (No. 2) on January 1, 2026, revealing an anniversary logo designed by renowned contemporary Chinese artist Han Meilin. The logo combines the image of a galloping horse with the number “80,” symbolizing the university’s momentum as it enters a new chapter.

On March 24, the university launched its dedicated anniversary website, marking 180 days before the celebration. The platform features six sections covering news, academic achievements, congratulatory messages, cultural heritage, events, and cloud services.

Academic activities have been equally prominent. In May, Jilin University co-hosted the ACS AMI Forum with ACS Publications, bringing together leading researchers under the theme “Breaking Boundaries Through Multidisciplinary Science.” In July, Springer published a special issue of Chemical Research in Chinese Universities dedicated to the anniversary. The university also hosted a collective alumni wedding, a philosophy discipline achievement exhibition, and a national symposium on Huang Danian-style teacher teams.

A University Without Walls

Perhaps most distinctive is Jilin University’s identity as an “open university.” The campus welcomes all visitors through advance reservation, opens all cafeterias to tourists, and allows external students to attend its job fairs. Its Archaeology and Art Museum is housed within the Changchun Museum, and its historic buildings along Xinmin Street—national cultural heritage protection units—remain in active use as classrooms, laboratories, and offices.

The university’s responsiveness to its community was demonstrated last summer when student complaints about the lack of air conditioning in dormitories prompted swift action. School leadership responded, “Students’ opinions and voices, if reasonable, must be listened to,” and air conditioning installation was quickly implemented.

Alumni Engagement and Regional Impact

At the Alumni Service Jilin High-Quality Development Conference held in Changchun on July 4, alumni investment projects totaling over 1.4 billion RMB were signed, spanning modern agriculture, traditional Chinese medicine, and high-end manufacturing. Jilin Province Vice Governor Liu Wei called the university Jilin’s “golden business card,” noting its role as an innovation source, talent reservoir, and industry think tank.

University Party Secretary Tian Hui emphasized the institution’s core mission of “revitalizing the North and serving the nation,” pledging deeper school-local collaboration to support Jilin’s comprehensive revitalization. The university has also received significant philanthropic support, including a 10 million RMB donation from Jilin Bank to establish an education development fund.

Looking Forward

As Jilin University approaches its 80th anniversary, its legacy is embodied in the words of “People’s Educator” Huang Danian, who wrote in a classmate’s graduation yearbook: “Revitalizing China is the responsibility of our generation.” The university’s alumni motto—“People are higher than mountains, feet are longer than roads”—captures the perseverance that has defined its eight decades.

With the main celebration scheduled for September 16, the university continues to build on its founding mission while charting a path toward its centennial goal of becoming a world-class university. The anniversary website and schedule of events outline a year of academic lectures, cultural exhibitions, and community engagement that reflect a university determined to be measured not by its size, but by its impact.
