Spider-Man: Brand New Day Shatters Box Office Record
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has officially dethroned “Avengers: Endgame” as the biggest domestic opening weekend in box office history, grossing $360 million from 4,487 theaters in the U.S. and Canada, according to AP News. The Sony and Marvel Studios production surpassed the previous record of $357.1 million set by “Avengers: Endgame” in April 2019, shattering industry expectations in the process.
The film’s global opening of approximately $932 million ranks as the second-largest worldwide debut of all time, trailing only “Avengers: Endgame“‘s $1.2 billion. Within six days of release, “Brand New Day” crossed $1 billion globally, making it the second-fastest movie ever to hit that milestone, as Variety reported.
A Record-Breaking Weekend
The numbers tell a story of unprecedented theatrical demand. “Brand New Day” set records for the largest preview haul with $72 million, the biggest opening day with $169.8 million, and the highest-grossing Monday in history with $47 million. After four days, the film had earned $407 million domestically, becoming the fastest movie to surpass $400 million in North America.
Remarkably, the film achieved its record without Imax screens in North America, which were committed to Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey.” The combined strength of both blockbusters propelled the biggest weekend of all time for North American theaters, with a total estimated at $430 million, surpassing the previous record of $402.1 million from “Endgame“‘s opening weekend, according to Deadline.
Industry Reaction
Sony Pictures Chairman and CEO Tom Rothman celebrated the milestone with characteristic flair. “Wow! 360 million thank-yous to all the filmmakers, actors, producers, and to my colleagues at Sony, who created such a fantastic film and an exceptional marketing and distribution campaign,” Rothman said. “Records are made to be broken, but we will take great pride in this one, for as long as we hold it.”
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, who now holds the distinction of overseeing the four biggest opening weekends in history, expressed his surprise at the achievement. “I did not expect ‘Endgame’s’ record to be beat, but I couldn’t be happier that it was beat this past weekend by our 38th MCU movie,” Feige told Variety.
Producer Amy Pascal, who has shepherded the Spider-Man franchise since its inception, credited director Destin Daniel Cretton’s vision. “We’re incredibly grateful to audiences for embracing the bold creative and deeply emotional vision Destin took with this film,” Pascal said. “This remarkable opening reinforces that moviegoers are hungry for stories that are both spectacular and deeply human.”
Audience Reception
The film earned an “A” CinemaScore and a 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside a 90% critic score. The audience skewed young and male, with 36% aged 18-24 and 61% men. Diversity demographics showed 36% Caucasian, 28% Hispanic/Latino, 20% Black, 10% Asian American, and 6% Native American/other, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
A Resurgent Box Office
The record-breaking debut comes at a pivotal moment for the theatrical industry. The domestic box office is up over 15% from last year, with more than $6.2 billion in ticket sales to date. “Brand New Day” is the fourth movie of 2026 to earn $1 billion, following “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” “Michael,” and “Toy Story 5.” Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” is poised to become the fifth.
“It’s only August, and 2026 has already produced the most billion-dollar blockbusters since the pandemic upended the movie theater industry,” noted Forbes. Industry observers are optimistic that overall domestic revenues could eclipse $10 billion for the first time since 2019.
What’s Next
“Brand New Day” is on track to potentially reach $2 billion globally, a milestone achieved by only seven films in history. The film’s success bodes well for Marvel’s upcoming slate, including “Avengers: Doomsday,” scheduled for December. Feige noted that the triumph “bodes very well” for the MCU’s future. “When a shared universe works,” he said, “these are the results.”
Imax announced it will split screens between “Brand New Day” and “The Odyssey” in North America starting August 6, potentially extending the film’s theatrical dominance. With Tom Holland’s future as Spider-Man still an open question, the record-breaking performance ensures the web-slinger’s cinematic legacy is secure for years to come.
