AI Robots Transform Elderly Care in China’s Wuhan
Wuhan is deploying AI-powered robots across its elderly care sector, from moxibustion devices with mechanical arms to smart guardian robots that autonomously monitor seniors’ health in their homes. The initiative reflects China’s broader push to address the challenges of an aging population through technology, according to Xinhua News.
Context: An Aging Nation
China’s elderly population has reached 323 million people aged 60 and above, accounting for 23 percent of the total population as of 2025. Projections suggest this figure will exceed 400 million by around 2035, pushing the country into a stage of severe aging. The demographic pressure has made scalable solutions essential, with AI technology positioned as a key answer to the labor shortage in elderly care.
Smart Facilities in Action
At the Shuiguohu Comprehensive Elderly Care Center in Wuhan’s Wuchang District, AI-powered equipment is integrated throughout the facility. Smart physiotherapy beds use built-in AI analysis to create personalized therapy plans based on each resident’s health profile. “The smart physiotherapy bed has built-in AI analysis functions. After basic health information is entered in advance, the system creates a personalized therapy plan,” said Lü Fang, medical staff at the center.
A smart moxibustion robot with a mechanical arm delivers traditional Chinese medicine treatments with precise acupuncture point targeting. The device, developed by a Wuhan expert team, has sold over 1,500 units, according to China.com Hubei. Smart nursing robots can detect bowel and bladder needs, automatically flush, and dry at constant temperature—tasks that previously required intensive manual care.
Community-Level Smart Monitoring
Beyond institutional facilities, lightweight smart monitoring devices are entering private homes in communities like Qianjiajie in Wuchang District, where over 30 percent of residents are aged 60 or above. Hundreds of households have been equipped with door magnetic sensors that detect if seniors haven’t left home for days, water immersion sensors for kitchen hazards, smoke alarms, and smart bed strips that monitor heart rate and pulse.
“In an emergency, I press the call button on my wristband, and community workers arrive quickly,” said Sun Bizhen, an 89-year-old resident. All terminal devices connect to an emergency response system that simultaneously pushes alerts to communities, operating companies, family members, and civil affairs departments. In one case, a senior with hypertension who fell at home received help within five minutes of triggering the emergency bracelet.
Human-AI Collaboration, Not Replacement
Industry leaders emphasize that AI in elderly care is about augmenting, not replacing, human caregivers. “At this stage, AI elderly care is not about machines simply replacing humans, but about artificial intelligence and manual care working together,” said Ge Jian, head of Hubei Qianjia Medical Health Care Services Co., Ltd. “In the elderly care field, AI means ‘human + intelligence’—where caregivers and robots achieve ‘1+1 > 2.’”
Yao Wei, a “post-90s” nursing department director at Wuhan Kangyang Wuchang District Elderly Care Center, explained that while AI robots can assist with bathing, human caregivers provide more detailed care including skin checks, joint assessment, and emotional communication. The Hubei Daily reported extensively on this dual-track approach, noting that cleaning, meal delivery, laundry, and night patrols are all areas where AI robots prove useful.
Policy Support and Future Plans
In January 2026, Wuhan released its livelihood projects list, proposing to install emergency call and smart monitoring devices in the homes of 11,000 willing elderly people living alone. The city’s “AI+” Action Plan, issued in February 2026, plans to build 50 intelligent consumption scenarios over the next three years, promoting the integration of smart wearable devices and humanoid robots in elderly care and childcare scenarios.
At the national level, eight departments including the Ministry of Civil Affairs and the National Development and Reform Commission issued measures in January 2026 explicitly encouraging the development of the elderly care service robot industry. Wuhan’s unified elderly care digital platform, currently being upgraded, has aggregated over 2,000 elderly care service providers and 14,000 elderly care products.
