Armed Man Arrested at Trump Golf Course Near Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES — A California man carrying ammunition and with a loaded gun in his vehicle was arrested Sunday at President Donald Trump’s Los Angeles-area golf course after appearing to monitor security preparations ahead of the president’s visit, authorities said.
Jeanine John Taele, 38, of Downey, was taken into custody at Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes, two days before Trump arrived for a Republican National Committee fundraising dinner on Tuesday, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department via AP News.
The Incident
Federal agents conducting a security assessment at the golf course first spotted Taele on Friday, July 31, walking throughout the property while wearing an earpiece and taking photographs and videos of security-planning activities, according to a federal criminal complaint.
Taele drove away but returned to the course on Sunday. He approached federal agents and claimed to be employed by the State Department and present for a security detail. He admitted to having a loaded firearm in his vehicle parked in the golf club parking lot.
When deputies detained Taele, they found a 16-round magazine containing hollow-point ammunition in his pants pocket. A search of his pickup truck turned up a loaded 9mm pistol with a loaded magazine containing hollow-point ammunition, a pair of binoculars, and a badge reading “security protection agent.”
A search of Taele’s home in Downey on Monday recovered an illegally modified AR-platform rifle, a 1911 .45 caliber pistol, body armor, high-capacity magazines, bulk ammunition, an earpiece, two radio signal devices, and multiple notebooks containing “concerning statements,” federal authorities said. No details about the statements were released.
Charges and Court Proceedings
Taele was charged with several felonies including second-degree robbery, receiving a large-capacity magazine, and possession of a short-barreled rifle or shotgun, as well as carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle, a misdemeanor. He was also wanted in connection with a 2025 robbery case out of El Segundo.
He pleaded not guilty to all charges Monday and was ordered to stay away from the golf course and not possess weapons. His bail was set at $250,000. The U.S. Attorney’s Office separately charged him federally with possession of an unregistered short-barreled rifle, a felony carrying a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison. His federal court appearance scheduled for Wednesday was cancelled as he remained in state custody, according to AP News.
“Mr. Taele’s troubling behavior at the President’s public golf course merely days before the President was expected to arrive raised serious red flags for law enforcement,” Patrick Grandy, assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles office, said in a statement. “There is no room for error, particularly in light of previous attempts on President Trump’s life.”
First Assistant United States Attorney Bill Essayli said federal and local law enforcement “stepped in early and prevented what could have been a dangerous situation from occurring.” The investigation remains ongoing.

The incident underscores the heightened security concerns surrounding Trump, who has survived multiple assassination attempts in recent years. In July 2024, a gunman opened fire at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, killing a crowd member and grazing Trump’s ear. In September 2024, Ryan Routh was arrested after aiming a rifle through shrubbery at Trump’s West Palm Beach country club and was later sentenced to life in prison. In April 2026, a California man sprinted through a security checkpoint at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner before being apprehended by Secret Service agents, as The Guardian reported.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said it had not identified any “credible threat to our communities,” but emphasized that the case “underscores the importance of vigilance, strong partnerships with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, and the proactive steps taken to identify and investigate suspicious activity before it can escalate,” as BBC News noted.
Political Context
The arrest came as Trump made a rare visit to California, a heavily Democratic state, ahead of the November midterm elections. The White House said Trump planned to tout his administration’s economic record, border security, and public safety agenda while drawing contrasts with California’s Democratic leadership, particularly Governor Gavin Newsom, a potential 2028 presidential candidate.
Newsom’s office pushed back ahead of the visit, accusing Trump of prioritizing fundraising over wildfire recovery, according to NBC Los Angeles.

Taele’s preliminary hearing on state charges is scheduled for August 26. Federal authorities said they are still investigating the motives of the individual, and additional charges may be filed.
