China’s Military Documentary Finale Reveals AI Systems

China has released the sixth and final episode of its military documentary series “Zhisheng” (Winning), titled “Lianzhan Liansheng” (Joint Operations, Joint Victory), which highlights the People’s Liberation Army’s decade-long transformation toward integrated joint warfare. The episode, broadcast on August 4-5, showcases AI-enabled strike-planning systems, drone integration, and striking footage of an H-6N bomber carrying a large missile under its fuselage, according to Xinhua News.

A Decade of Joint Operations Reform

The documentary series, produced by the Central Military Commission Political Work Department, the Central Cyberspace Affairs Commission, and China Media Group, was released to mark the PLA’s 99th anniversary on August 1. The final episode centers on the joint operations command system established in February 2016, when President Xi Jinping awarded military flags to the five theater commands—a historic step that replaced the previous military region structure.

The episode follows personnel who participated in this transformation, including Chang Gaoxiang of the Southern Theater Command Joint Operations Command Center, who joined the command restructuring a decade ago. H-6N Bomber and JL-1 Missile Footage

Perhaps the most significant visual revelation is footage of two J-20 stealth fighters escorting an H-6N bomber carrying a large missile under its fuselage. According to Global Times, military experts identify the weapon as likely the JL-1 air-launched long-range ballistic missile, capable of anti-ship or ground-strike missions.

Wang Yanan, editor-in-chief of Aerospace Knowledge magazine, told Global Times that air-launched weapons offer stronger penetration capabilities and greater concealment compared with traditional land-based ballistic missiles. “More critically, the enemy cannot predict the H-6N’s launch position, making it extremely difficult to defend against,” Wang said. The J-20 escort provides a “stealth protective umbrella” for the non-stealth H-6N at medium to long range.

The H-6N’s 3,500 km combat radius combined with the missile’s range extends total strike distance to approximately 7,500 km, a capability that analysts note pushes US carrier strike groups further from China’s coast.

Drone Integration and Sea-Air Joint Operations
