China U17 Football Team Advances with Two Straight Wins
China’s U17 men’s football team secured a 1-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao’s U17 squad on August 4, earning their second consecutive win and clinching early advancement from the group stage at the 2026 Shanghai Future Star Champions Cup, according to Xinhua News.
The win at the SAIC Pudong Football Stadium in Shanghai followed a dramatic 3-2 last-minute victory over Arsenal U17 on August 3, giving China six points and top spot in Group A with one group match remaining.

Cheng Shenghan scored the only goal of the match in the 14th minute, rising to meet a corner kick delivered by Xu Zhengpeng and powering a header past the Bilbao goalkeeper. It was Cheng’s second consecutive game scoring with a header, having also netted the stoppage-time winner against Arsenal the night before.
Due to the tight schedule—playing Arsenal less than 24 hours earlier—head coach Ushijima Satoshi made extensive rotations to the starting lineup, with only captain Zhou Yunuo retaining his place from the previous match. The NetEase report noted that key players including Zhao Songyuan, Kuang Zhaolei, and Pan Chaowei started on the bench.
Goalkeeper Jiang Yuhan delivered a standout performance, making several key saves to preserve the clean sheet as Bilbao pushed forward aggressively in the second half. The Spanish side created multiple scoring opportunities but failed to find the back of the net.
“The opponents have excellent physical attributes and fast counter-attacks, we need to be more focused on defense,” Zhou Yunuo said after playing the full match, as quoted by Xinhua.
Group Standings and Qualification
With two wins from two matches, China U17 tops Group A with six points, followed by Arsenal U17 with three points after their 2-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen. Athletic Bilbao and Bayer Leverkusen each have one point, as Sohu Sports reported.
The result guarantees China a place in the semi-finals with one group game remaining. In Group B, Shanghai U17 also secured a 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur U17.
World Cup Preparation
The Shanghai Future Star Champions Cup, now in its fifth edition, serves as the final high-level preparation for China U17 before the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar in November 2026, as Shanghai Observer via NetEase noted. The tournament brings together eight elite youth teams from Europe and South America, including Arsenal, Bayer Leverkusen, Athletic Bilbao, Tottenham Hotspur, River Plate, and Sporting CP.
China qualified for the U17 World Cup for the first time in 21 years after beating Qatar 2-0 in the final group match of the 2026 AFC U17 Asian Cup in May, ending a 21-year absence from the tournament since their last appearance in Peru in 2005. As People’s Daily reported, the qualification marked a breakthrough for Chinese youth football after years of disappointment.
Senior national team head coach Shao Jiayi reportedly attended the match against Bilbao, underscoring the significance of this youth development pathway.

China U17 will face Bayer Leverkusen U17 in their final group match on August 6 at the Yuanshen Sports Center. The team has already secured advancement but will aim to finish the group stage with a perfect record and build momentum heading into the knockout rounds, which begin on August 7. The tournament concludes on August 9 with the final.
