Kitesurfer Dies After Tragic Accident on Oostduinkerke Beach
A 63-year-old kitesurfer from Diest has died after a serious accident on the beach of Oostduinkerke in West Flanders, Belgium. The man was struck by a sudden wind gust while preparing his equipment and was thrown against a rescue jetski, according to VRT NWS.
The Accident
The incident occurred at approximately 3:15 PM on Wednesday, August 5, near the watersport club SYCOD (Sand Yacht Club Oostduinkerke). The victim was preparing his kitesurfing gear on the beach when a sudden gust of wind caught his kite sail, to which he had already attached his harness.
“The wind gust hit the sail of the kitesurfer to which he had already attached himself,” said Joeri Van der Veken, head lifeguard of the IKWW sea rescue services. “He was blown away by the gust and fell against the jetski of watersport club SYCOD. That is always there to help people in need.”
The impact broke the man’s helmet and caused a severe head wound. Emergency responders resuscitated him on site and transported him to hospital in critical condition, where he died that evening.
Weather conditions at the time were described as beautiful but windy, with wind speeds of 22 knots (approximately 5-6 Beaufort), which attracted many water sports enthusiasts to the beach. The initial report of the incident was covered by VRT NWS on Wednesday evening.
Identification Through a Key
Identifying the victim proved challenging. The man was alone on the beach and carried no identification documents. Police eventually identified him through a key attached to his harness, which led them to his address via a locksmith, allowing them to notify his wife.
“There was a key attached to the harness he was wearing,” police said. “Through the locksmith we got the address where he was staying and were able to notify his wife.”
Reactions from the Watersport Community
The watersport club SYCOD, one of the largest in Belgium with over 1,200 members, reacted with shock to the tragedy. “It is a very tragic accident,” the club said in a statement. “That man had incredible bad luck. Had he landed a meter further, he would have fallen in the sand and there would likely have been nothing wrong.”
Club members noted that although the victim was not a member of SYCOD, they had seen him practicing before and recognized him as an experienced kitesurfer. The club maintains an emergency jetski on the beach, stationed there at all times for rescue operations.
Head lifeguard Van der Veken emphasized how unusual the circumstances were. “This is a particularly unfortunate accident,” he said. “A meter further and he would have simply fallen in the sand. Half an hour later we had an identical incident on the beach a bit further. There someone was briefly stunned by the impact on the sand, but was otherwise fine.”
A Tragic Reminder of Kitesurfing Risks
The accident serves as a sobering reminder of the inherent dangers of kitesurfing, particularly during equipment preparation on land. Kitesurfers can be especially vulnerable to sudden wind gusts when their kites are inflated and attached before entering the water.
French-language media also reported on the incident. La Libre and La DH reported via the Belga news agency that the victim was “surprised by a gust as she was about to head out to sea” and that his helmet “broke in two” upon impact.
The regional newspaper Krant van West-Vlaanderen highlighted the tragic nature of the accident, quoting the club’s assessment that the victim had suffered “incredible bad luck.”

Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the accident. The beach at Oostduinkerke, known for its wide sandy expanse and popularity among water sports enthusiasts, has seen previous kitesurfing incidents, though fatal accidents remain rare.
