KLJ Balen Summer Camp Cut Short After Serious Incident
The summer camp of KLJ Balen in Plombières, a municipality in Belgium’s Liège province, was prematurely stopped on Wednesday evening after several members of the camp’s leadership team became victims of a serious incident involving a local resident. The individual in question has been arrested by police, according to VRT NWS.
The camp, which had been scheduled to run from August 1 through August 9 with 125 participants, was halted in consultation with the municipal government, local police, the public prosecutor’s office, and KLJ Nationaal. The camp members—children and youth—were not involved in the incident and were informed of the situation on Thursday morning.
A Serious Incident
“This is a serious incident. Several members of the leadership team have become victims of an external person, presumably someone from the area,” said Sofie Leysen (CD&V), Mayor of Balen, in an interview with VRT NWS. “The person has been arrested by now, but the leadership didn’t feel like continuing the camp.”
The exact details of what occurred on Wednesday evening remain unclear, and authorities have not yet disclosed the nature of the incident or what charges the arrested individual may face. What is known is that the leadership team of the youth organization decided they could not continue the camp under the circumstances.
Mayor Leysen emphasized the responsible manner in which the leadership handled the situation. “I especially want to emphasize how responsible and mature the leadership team has acted. They acted quickly and made a good choice,” she said.
Return Home and Support
KLJ Balen spent Thursday morning cleaning up the camp site and was expected to return to Balen, a municipality in the province of Antwerp, on Thursday afternoon. Upon arrival, psychosocial support was arranged through the Red Cross (Rode Kruis) to help camp members and leadership process the events.
“In consultation with the municipal government, the local police, the public prosecutor’s office and KLJ Nationaal, it was decided to leave Plombières early,” Leysen explained. “We will also support and relieve the leadership there. In the coming days, we will also look at what aftercare is still needed to support the leadership, members, and parents.”
