Armed Man Arrested at Trump Golf Course Near Los Angeles
A man carrying ammunition and a loaded pistol was arrested Sunday at President Donald Trump’s golf course in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, after authorities say he appeared to be monitoring security preparations ahead of the president’s visit for a Republican National Committee fundraising dinner, according to AP News.
The suspect, Jeanine John Taele, 38, of Downey, was taken into custody after plainclothes federal agents reported a suspicious individual on the property. Deputies recovered a 16-round magazine containing hollow point ammunition from his pants pocket and found a loaded 9mm pistol with a round chambered, binoculars, and a badge reading “security protection agent” in his pickup truck parked in the golf course lot.
A Troubling Pattern of Surveillance
Federal agents conducting a security assessment at the course on Friday, July 31, first observed Taele walking throughout the grounds wearing an earpiece and taking photographs and videos of their activities, according to a federal criminal complaint. He drove away but returned on Sunday, approaching agents and falsely claiming to be employed by the State Department on a security detail.
“Mr. Taele’s troubling behavior at the President’s public golf course merely days before the President was expected to arrive raised serious red flags for law enforcement,” Patrick Grandy, assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles office, said in a statement. “There is no room for error, particularly in light of previous attempts on President Trump’s life.”
Weapons Cache Found at Home
On Monday, law enforcement executed a search warrant at Taele’s home in Downey, recovering an illegally modified AR platform rifle with a barrel cut from 14 inches to 10 inches, a 1911 .45 caliber pistol, body armor, high-capacity magazines, bulk ammunition, two radio signal devices, and multiple notebooks containing “concerning statements,” authorities said. The nature of those statements has not been disclosed.
Taele faces state charges including second-degree robbery, receiving a large-capacity magazine, possession of a short-barreled rifle or shotgun, and carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle. He also faces a federal charge of possession of an unregistered short-barreled rifle, which carries a maximum 10-year sentence. He pleaded not guilty to all charges Monday, with bail set at $250,000, and was ordered to stay away from the golf course and not possess weapons.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department stated they have not identified any “credible threat to our communities,” and officials have not said whether Taele intended to harm the president. However, the BBC reported that the investigation is continuing with assistance from the U.S. Secret Service, and additional charges may be filed.
A Former Marine and Licensed Security Guard
Taele served as a corporal in the U.S. Marines from 2008 to 2016, with deployments to Iraq in 2008 and Afghanistan in 2010, according to Newsweek. He earned numerous commendations, including a good conduct award. State records show he is a licensed security guard, though several of his permits to carry a firearm as a security guard were cancelled or suspended.
Authorities also determined Taele was being investigated by the El Segundo Police Department for a 2025 robbery, according to NPR.
Heightened Security Environment
The arrest comes amid an already elevated threat environment surrounding the president. Trump has survived three assassination attempts in recent years, including a shooting at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July 2024; an incident at his Florida golf course in September 2024; and a shooting at a Washington hotel during the White House Correspondents’ dinner in April 2026.
Speaking to Fox News on Tuesday, Trump addressed the arrest, saying, “Only consequential presidents are targeted, and I am definitely consequential.”
A neighbor of Taele who spoke with ABC7 Los Angeles expressed shock at the arrest: “It’s scary, you know? We live here. We’re not too far down from the house. But I never got that vibe, you know? Because it’s like a family… You don’t know anybody willing to go that far, you know?”

Taele remains in custody at a downtown Los Angeles jail on state charges and has not yet been transferred to federal authorities. His federal court appearance was cancelled Wednesday, and officials say he is expected to appear in federal court after his transfer. The FBI, Secret Service, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Major Crimes Bureau, and the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force continue to investigate.
The case underscores the ongoing security challenges at Trump’s properties and the vigilance required to protect the president in an increasingly complex threat environment. As the sheriff’s department noted, the incident “underscores the importance of vigilance, strong partnerships with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, and the proactive steps taken to identify and investigate suspicious activity before it can escalate.”
