BeiDou Satellite System Completes Full In-Orbit Upgrade

China’s BeiDou Navigation Satellite System has fully completed a comprehensive in-orbit upgrade, the China Satellite Navigation Office (CSNO) announced on July 31. The upgrade enhances the system’s positioning, navigation, and timing services for users worldwide, marking a significant milestone in China’s space technology development.

The upgrade work was launched in March 2026, with engineers and controllers optimizing the working status of some satellites to ensure continued high-quality service delivery. According to China Daily, the office stated that the system will diversify and develop new navigation technologies while fully guaranteeing stable operation.

System Capabilities and Performance

As a mature, fully functional, and high-performance global satellite navigation system, the BeiDou system currently operates 50 satellites in orbit. It achieves a global positioning accuracy of better than 10 meters, velocity measurement accuracy better than 0.2 meters per second, and timing accuracy within 20 nanoseconds, as reported by Xinhua. Through its Precise Point Positioning service signal, the system can realize horizontal positioning accuracy better than 0.3 meters and vertical accuracy better than 0.6 meters.

Why the Upgrade Was Needed

BeiDou satellites have a design life of 10-12 years, and some in-orbit satellites from both the BeiDou-2 and BeiDou-3 generations have exceeded their design lifespan. Zhang Shuangna, a researcher at the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation Fifth Academy, explained in Guangming Daily that the optimization and upgrading were an inevitable choice to ensure service quality. Similar to how phones update their systems through software upgrades, BeiDou satellites can receive software uploads from the ground segment to complete capability upgrades.

A Global Navigation Powerhouse

BeiDou is one of the four global navigation networks, alongside the United States’ GPS, Russia’s GLONASS, and the European Union’s Galileo. Since 2000, 64 BeiDou satellites, including four experimental ones, have been launched on 47 Long March 3 series rockets from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan province. The system was declared complete in July 2020 and began providing full-scale global services.

Unlike GPS, BeiDou uniquely integrates navigation and communication capabilities, offering seven types of services including global short message communication and international search and rescue. The system’s short message communication feature was famously demonstrated during the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, when rescue teams used BeiDou terminals to send the first disaster information back to command centers despite complete network and power outages.

Deep Integration into Daily Life

Almost all smartphone users in China use BeiDou services on a daily basis, with approximately 288 million smartphones supporting BeiDou positioning. By the end of 2024, nearly 30 million BeiDou terminal devices were in use across major industries and sectors. The system has become deeply integrated into China’s economy, with the 2025 industry scale estimated at 620 billion yuan (approximately $86 billion).

BeiDou services and related products have been exported to more than 140 countries and regions, with the system used in over 130 countries. Applications range from precision farming and unmanned tractors to bike-sharing with centimeter-level positioning, smart city management, financial transactions with precise timestamps, and drone operations.

Economic Ambitions and the 2035 Vision

According to CCTV News, the National Development and Reform Commission has stated that during the “15th Five-Year Plan” period, China will continue to implement the BeiDou scale application project, promoting the BeiDou industry scale to exceed 1 trillion yuan within five years.

Looking ahead, the CSNO said the system will strive to fulfill the goal of establishing a more ubiquitous, integrated, and intelligent comprehensive space-time system by 2035. Under the BeiDou development plan released in November 2024, China will launch three pilot test satellites for next-generation technology experiments in 2027, begin launching next-generation constellation satellites in 2029, and complete construction of the next-generation system by 2035.

The completion of the in-orbit upgrade positions BeiDou for its next phase of evolution. As the system continues to enrich its navigation technology capabilities, global users can expect increasingly precise and reliable positioning services. The next-generation BeiDou system, featuring meter-to-decimeter level real-time high-precision positioning, will further cement China’s position in the global satellite navigation landscape.
