The largest flood peak since the start of the 2026 flood season successfully passed through the Yangtze River section in Fuling, Chongqing, on August 6, according to Xinhua News. Water levels in the section rose cumulatively by more than 6 meters during the event, marking one of the most significant flood episodes of the year.

Context: A Season of Heavy Rainfall

The flood peak was part of a broader weather event affecting the upper Yangtze River basin. From August 1-4, continuous heavy rainfall caused the largest round of rising water since the start of the flood season in the Yangtze and Jialing River sections in Chongqing. The Cuntan hydrological station recorded a cumulative water level rise of approximately 7.5 meters, setting a new peak record for this year’s flood season, as reported by Xinhua via China Military Network.

The Ministry of Water Resources had already activated a Level IV flood defense emergency response for Chongqing on August 2 at 13:00, following forecasts of heavy rain from August 2-4 in the central and southeastern parts of the city, according to CCTV via 21st Century Business Herald.

The Yangtze River Fuling Navigation Department activated flood control plans in advance, relying on the digital waterway system for 24-hour monitoring and precisely tracking the status of every navigation buoy, as detailed in a report by China News Service.

During the flood peak period, the navigation department conducted 35 patrol trips, covering over 1,100 kilometers of vessel inspection mileage, and made 29 navigation buoy adjustments and optimizations. These measures effectively ensured the safety of vessel passage through the affected waterway.

Maritime authorities also played a critical role in managing the flood event. During the flood peak passage in Chongqing, they conducted inspections of over 70 anchored vessels and video checks on 716 key vessels, ensuring zero incidents and zero accidents in the jurisdiction, according to the China Military Network report.

The flood event in Chongqing was part of a wider pattern of flood prevention efforts across China during the 2026 main flood season. China fully entered the main flood season on July 1, 2026, with both north and south experiencing multiple rain zones. According to China Daily, the Yangtze River basin’s joint dispatch system expanded from 132 to 135 water projects in 2026, further enhancing flood control capacity in the middle and lower reaches.

The Three Gorges Reservoir serves as the center of the Yangtze River basin reservoir group for flood interception, peak shaving, and error correction. Ding Shengxiang, director of the Flood and Drought Disaster Prevention Bureau of the Yangtze River Water Resources Commission, emphasized the focus on preventing local heavy rainfall-induced flood disasters while also preparing for rapid transitions from floods to droughts.

In Chongqing specifically, the municipal water resources bureau launched a special inspection campaign for all 3,075 reservoirs in the city starting in July, focusing on safety risk identification and closed-loop management, as reported by Chongqing News Network. The city also launched a “mass prevention and mass governance” 100-day campaign to improve grassroots disaster prevention capabilities.

As of the latest reports, water levels in the Fuling section of the Yangtze River have slowly receded. The navigation department is continuously tracking water conditions and dynamically optimizing arrangements to ensure the safety and smooth flow of navigation channels during the flood season.
