Missouri Neighbor Kills Mother, Teen Daughter Over Dispute

A mother and her 17-year-old daughter were fatally shot in their Missouri home by a 73-year-old neighbor who confronted them over a dispute, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. The suspect, Robert Winkelman, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on August 2, ending the criminal case against him.

The Shooting

On the evening of July 25, Winkelman walked from his residence to a neighboring home in House Springs, Missouri, approximately 40 minutes southwest of St. Louis, and questioned those present about activities at the residence, Fox News reported.

According to investigators, after 38-year-old Jessica Lashly made a comment, Winkelman pulled out a firearm and shot her in the head. When her daughter, Jersey Greer, attempted to provide first aid to her mother, Winkelman allegedly shot the teenager in the head as well. A third person was chased by Winkelman while he was armed but was not shot.

When deputies arrived and confronted Winkelman outside his home, he turned the gun on himself, WGEM reported. All three were transported to local hospitals in critical condition.

Victims Remembered

Jessica Lashly and Jersey Greer died on July 27 after being taken off life support. An Honor Walk was held at the hospital after their organs were donated. Jersey’s organ donation helped six patients across the country — three children and three adults, the New York Post reported.

Jersey was a rising senior at Northwest High School in Cedar Hill, Missouri, where she played lacrosse alongside her twin sister, Justice. The twins were described as inseparable and planned to play college lacrosse together.

Justice Greer, who was at work during the shooting, spoke to KSDK about her sister’s final act of bravery: “Jersey’s last moments, she was trying to save my mom. It just shows how brave she is, and I hope I can be half as brave as she is.”

“She was literally just the funniest person ever,” Justice said of her sister. “She could make anybody laugh. She was really supportive about anything and everything. She could always tell when someone was sad or needed uplifting, and she was always the one to do it.”

Justice also remembered her mother as a hardworking single mother who did everything for her twin daughters. “It was always just us three,” she said. “It’s going to be really hard because that’s all I’m used to.”

Lindsey Oberkramer, Jessica Lashly’s sister, described her as someone who “loved fiercely.” “You never really knew what she was going to say, but she always had the right thing to say,” Oberkramer told Wide Open Country. “Everybody knew how she felt about them and it was usually just love and support.”

Community Response

The Northwest High School lacrosse program organized a GoFundMe campaign to help with funeral costs and ongoing support for Justice. As of August 7, the campaign had raised over $57,000 toward its $60,000 goal, with 868 donations.

“Our hearts are broken for their family, friends, teammates, and everyone whose lives they touched,” the fundraiser reads. “As they navigate this unimaginable loss, we ask for your continued prayers, love, and support.”

Abby Feldmann, who coached both Greer twins in lacrosse, told KSDK that Jersey was someone who could “change your whole perspective on life.” “There’s not one person who would refuse to follow her,” Feldmann said. “Everyone’s behind her. She’s really an amazing girl.”

Legal Outcome

Investigators determined that Winkelman had “ongoing frustrations” regarding activities at the neighboring residence, fox17/WKRC reported.

Before his death, Winkelman had been charged with two counts of first-degree assault and two counts of armed criminal action. After the victims’ deaths, the charges were amended to two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action, and a no-bond warrant was issued.

Winkelman died on August 2 at Mercy South Hospital from his self-inflicted gunshot wound. With his death, the criminal case against him did not proceed, LiveNOW from FOX confirmed.
