Phoenix Hit by Two Rare Category 5 Dust Storms in One Week
Phoenix was struck by two unusually intense haboob dust storms within the same week, events that scientists say are unprecedented in the region’s recorded history. Both storms were classified as Category 5 on the newly developed PHX-DUST Scale, the highest severity rating, marking only the fifth and sixth such events in 16 years of tracking, according to AP News.
The first storm rolled through the Valley on Monday night, August 3, followed by a second in the early morning hours of Thursday, August 6. Both reduced visibility to half a mile and produced wind speeds of approximately 50 mph, creating hazardous driving conditions and raising significant air quality concerns across the metro area.
A Rare Double Event
“To have Class 5 dust storms occur one right after another a few days apart is unprecedented in our records,” said Randall Cerveny, a professor in the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning at Arizona State University. “We don’t see that.”
National Weather Service meteorologist Matt Salerno noted that the timing of both storms provided some relief. “Luckily, they both happened when it was later at night, so there was less traffic on the roads,” he told AP News.
The second storm, which arrived early Thursday, produced the highest dust concentration ever recorded at a sensor in west Chandler, peaking at 5,841 micrograms per cubic meter after 1 a.m. According to azfamily.com, strong outflow winds from decaying thunderstorms near Tucson pushed a massive wall of dust into the metro area, impacting air quality monitoring stations across the Valley.

Understanding the PHX-DUST Scale
The PHX-DUST Scale, developed by researchers at Arizona State University and regional partners, is the first scientific post-event classification tool designed to measure and rank the severity of dust storms in the Phoenix metropolitan region. It evaluates storms using multiple indicators, including particulate matter, wind speed, duration and geographic extent, according to the ASU PHX-DUST Scale website.
Dr. Ryan Heintzman, a professor at ASU who helped create the scale, explained the health implications of a Category 5 event. “If you’re outside for an hour during a Category 1 event, it might be something like 250,000 pieces of dust that you’re inhaling,” he said. “A Category 5 is five times that amount. If you’re outside during a Category 5 event, it would be something like over a million pieces of dust that you would be inhaling.”
Health Risks and Expert Warnings
Medical experts have urged vulnerable populations to take the storms seriously. Dr. Frank LoVecchio, an ASU professor and emergency room physician, said certain groups face greater risk during events like this. “I would say if you have lung disease, heart disease, the very young, the very old, if for some reason you’re immunosuppressed, those are people who get into trouble during this time,” he told azfamily.com.
JoAnna Strother of the American Lung Association noted that dust particles often carry trapped allergens such as mold spores and pollutants that can trigger allergic reactions, and the dust can also carry fungal spores that can cause Valley Fever.
Dr. Sanjay Patel, an allergist and immunologist, recommended saline rinses, N-95 masks and HEPA-certified air purifiers for those affected by the dusty conditions, according to azfamily.com.
Why This Matters
The Valley typically sees between 5 and 15 dust storms per year, and the current count of eight is within the normal range. However, the intensity of the recent storms is notable, as Forbes reported. Researchers noted that the Phoenix region has been drier than normal, which increases the amount of loose dust that can be kicked up by storm winds.
Scientists have said human-caused climate change increases the odds of both severe drought and heavier storms, potentially setting the stage for more intense dust storms in the future.
Tom Gill, a dust storm expert at the University of Texas at El Paso, described haboobs as “a very underappreciated weather hazard” with wide-ranging impacts, from highway crashes and fatalities to respiratory and cardiovascular health problems, degraded power infrastructure and soiling of solar panels.
