China’s BeiDou Satellite Navigation System Completes Full In-Orbit Upgrade

China’s BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) has fully completed its comprehensive in-orbit upgrade, according to an announcement from the China Satellite Navigation Office (CSNO) on July 31. The upgrade significantly enhances the system’s positioning accuracy, reliability, and service capabilities, strengthening China’s technological independence in satellite navigation while providing improved services to users across the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

Context: A Strategic Space Infrastructure

BeiDou is one of the world’s four global navigation satellite systems, alongside the United States’ GPS, Russia’s GLONASS, and the European Union’s Galileo. China developed the system to achieve self-reliance in satellite navigation, reducing dependence on foreign systems for critical infrastructure. As China Daily noted, BeiDou is one of China’s largest civilian satellite systems, and since 2000, 64 BeiDou satellites—including four experimental ones—have been launched on 47 Long March 3 series rockets from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center. The system was declared complete in July 2020 and began providing full-scale global services.

The Upgrade: What Changed

The upgrade was formally announced in March 2026, using a strategy of “batch implementation, satellite-by-satellite verification, and dynamic switching,” as reported by Xinhua. The work focused on improving inter-satellite link transmission efficiency, optimizing signal capture capability in complex environments, and enhancing the system’s anti-interference capability.

According to IT之家, the BDS has become the first global navigation satellite system to achieve large-scale in-orbit software-defined and continuous evolution capabilities. Academic research shows that after the upgrade, the Position Dilution of Precision (PDOP) at the worst global location has been optimized.

Performance Metrics

The system currently operates 50 satellites in orbit, delivering strong performance across multiple dimensions. As CGTN reported, the BDS offers global positioning accuracy better than 10 meters, space signal accuracy better than 2 meters, velocity measurement accuracy better than 0.2 meters per second, and timing accuracy within 20 nanoseconds. Through its Precise Point Positioning (PPP) service signal, the system achieves horizontal positioning accuracy better than 0.3 meters and vertical accuracy better than 0.6 meters.

The official BeiDou website confirmed that the system will continue to develop new navigation technologies while ensuring stable operation, aiming to provide more stable and reliable positioning, navigation, and timing services to global users.

Expert Perspectives and Future Plans

BeiDou-3 chief designer Xie Jun revealed that China is planning the next-generation BeiDou system with significantly improved service precision. “Our next step is to achieve positioning accuracy better than 1 meter, and with other means, better than centimeter-level,” Xie said, as reported by Science and Technology Daily. “In the future, once you enter a location that needs positioning, you can achieve positioning within 10 seconds of opening your terminal, with accuracy improving from the current several meters to decimeter and centimeter level.”

The next-generation system will also provide navigation for space vehicles, expanding BeiDou’s capabilities beyond terrestrial applications.

Analysis: A Milestone in Space Infrastructure

The in-orbit upgrade represents a significant technological milestone for several reasons. As SpaceEyeNews observed, it demonstrates China’s ability to modify and improve satellite systems while they remain operational in space—a sign of technical maturity and confidence in the network’s ground segment and engineering teams.

Unlike traditional satellite systems that remain static after deployment, BeiDou is becoming a living platform that can be tuned, updated, and optimized over time. As researcher Zhang Shuangna of the China Academy of Space Technology noted, “If there is no self-controlled BeiDou satellite navigation system, the time and position security of national important facilities can only rely on GPS or other satellite navigation systems, posing huge security risks.”

Looking ahead, China has set an ambitious target of building a more ubiquitous, integrated, and intelligent comprehensive space-time system by 2035. According to the BeiDou Satellite Navigation System Development Plan Before 2035, the country aims to complete key technology research by 2025, launch pilot test satellites by 2027, begin deploying the next-generation constellation by 2029, and complete system construction by 2035.

The next-generation BeiDou system will feature “precise and trustworthy, on-demand access, intelligent, networked, flexible” characteristics, providing decimeter to centimeter-level positioning accuracy. As People’s Daily reported, the system will enrich and develop new navigation technology means while fully ensuring stable operation, striving to achieve the 2035 goal of building a more comprehensive space-time system.

For global users, the completed upgrade means more reliable positioning, navigation, and timing services. For the broader technology landscape, it signals that satellite navigation infrastructure is entering a new era of continuous evolution—one where systems are not just launched, but actively refined and improved throughout their operational lifetimes.
