China’s Electricity Load Hits Record High Again This Summer

China’s national electricity load reached a historic record high of 1.557 billion kilowatts on August 7, marking the fourth time this summer that peak power demand has set a new all-time record, according to Xinhua News. A total of 25 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities, including Beijing, Liaoning, Jiangsu, and Jiangxi, have seen their electricity loads set records a cumulative 78 times.

Drivers of Surging Demand

The National Energy Administration attributes the sustained demand growth to two primary factors: economic improvement as the main driver of electricity consumption growth, and hot weather as the direct factor pushing up load levels. Power Supply Response

Despite the record-breaking demand, China’s power supply system has maintained stability. The country’s total installed power generation capacity exceeded 4 billion kilowatts as of end-June 2026, up 10.8 percent year-on-year. New energy installed capacity surpassed 1.9 billion kilowatts, providing strong support for midday peak demand. The CEC forecasts second-half 2026 electricity consumption growth of 5-6 percent, with maximum system load projected at 1.57-1.63 billion kilowatts. As the summer peak season continues, the repeated record-breaking loads highlight the growing challenge of managing peak electricity demand in an era of rapid electrification, AI-driven data center expansion, and EV adoption.

Electricity consumption is widely considered a “barometer” of economic activity in China.
