China’s 6G Push Accelerates: What Users Need to Know

China’s sixth-generation (6G) mobile communications development is accelerating at an unprecedented pace, with a series of policy and industry actions in 2026 moving the technology from laboratory research toward field testing and industrial deployment. According to People’s Daily via Xinhua, the country is making rapid progress across multiple fronts, raising expectations that commercial 6G services could arrive around 2030.

A Year of Milestones

The acceleration has been marked by several significant developments. In May 2026, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) approved 6GHz band 6G test frequency usage permits for the IMT-2030 (6G) Promotion Group, making China the first country in the world to approve 6G test frequency usage licenses, as ITHome reported citing CCTV Finance.

What does this approval mean in practical terms? As the People’s Daily commentary explains, with this permit, engineers can now test real-world issues like signal penetration and device interference in actual urban and industrial scenarios. Using a driver’s license analogy, China has essentially passed the theoretical learning and closed training ground stages and can now “practice in real combat” on “real roads.”

The momentum continued through the summer. In June, the MIIT launched the 6G Innovation Development Provincial-Ministry Coordinated Pilot Special Action, supporting pilot regions in test environment construction, test plan formulation, and result sharing. By July, Jiangsu Province had established a 6G Industry Alliance, and Hubei Province released a 6G Industry Innovation Development Action Plan.

Three-Phase Testing Framework

China’s 6G technical testing follows a structured three-phase approach: the Key Technology Testing Phase, the Technology Solution Testing Phase, and the System Networking Testing Phase. According to MIIT officials via ITHome, the first phase—which ran from 2022 to 2025—has been completed, forming over 300 key technology reserves. The second phase, focused on developing 6G prototype equipment for typical scenarios and performance indicators, is now underway.

Du Ying, Deputy Director of the Wireless and Mobile Communications Research Institute at the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), described China’s 6G status at a December 2025 conference: “China’s 6G is at a critical stage where vision and requirements are clearly defined, technological breakthroughs are showing initial results, and standards research is fully underway.” She added that during the ‘15th Five-Year Plan’ period, the focus will be on standards development and industrial R&D, with commercial application expected to start around 2030.

Satellite-Ground Integration Takes Shape

A key development in China’s 6G strategy came on July 30, 2026, when the IMT-2030 (6G) Promotion Group established the Satellite-Ground Integration (NTN) Working Group in Beijing, under the guidance of MIIT’s Information and Communication Development Department. As Xinhua reported, the working group’s scope covers satellite air interface access technology, satellite terminal technology, satellite-ground integrated network technology, and operations and application technology.

The NTN Working Group is led by CAICT, with China Satellite Network Group, Shanghai Yuanxin Satellite Technology, China Telecom, China Mobile, and China Unicom serving as deputy lead units. This brings together the country’s major telecom operators, satellite companies, and research institutions to coordinate 6G satellite communication technology development—a critical component for expanding network coverage and enabling ubiquitous connectivity.

Building on the 5G Foundation

China’s extensive 5G infrastructure provides a strong foundation for 6G. In 2025, the country added 588,000 new 5G base stations, bringing the total to 4.838 million, with 5G-A network coverage in over 330 cities. China’s 5G standard essential patent declarations account for 42 percent globally.

Contrary to concerns that 5G infrastructure might become obsolete, the People’s Daily commentary emphasizes that 5G infrastructure will be upgraded and leveraged for 6G rather than replaced. Notably, Chinese Academy of Engineering academician Zhang Ping led a team that verified the feasibility of semantic communication technology achieving 6G transmission capabilities on existing 4G and 5G links—exploring a new development path for achieving 6G performance goals at low frequencies and narrow bandwidths.

This approach aligns with the ‘15th Five-Year Plan’ principle of “moderate advancement, not excessive advancement” in infrastructure planning, emphasizing strengthening infrastructure coordination, optimizing layout, and promoting integration.

International Standardization Progress

On the global stage, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) finalized draft technical performance requirements for IMT-2030 (6G) in February 2026, with formal approval expected in December. The framework defines 20 technical performance requirements, with seven being new and specific to 6G. Six usage scenarios have been proposed: Immersive Communication, Hyper Reliable and Low-Latency Communication, Massive Communication, Ubiquitous Connectivity, AI and Communication, and Integrated Sensing and Communication.

According to GSMA data reported by ITHome, next-generation 6G networks will need up to three times more mid-band spectrum than currently available. By 2035-2040, each country will need 2-3 GHz of mid-band spectrum for high-demand urban areas. GSMA projects that 6G networks will begin commercial deployment in 2030, with China, Japan, South Korea, the US, GCC countries, Europe, Vietnam, and India leading early large-scale deployment. By 2040, over 5 billion 6G connections are projected.

Global Competition Heats Up

The race to 6G is not limited to China. As WIRED noted, key players like Qualcomm, Ericsson, and Nokia kicked off the hype at Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona. The next-generation network will focus on upload speeds, AI integration, and radar-like “sensing” capabilities. Industry experts expect 6G to be deployed globally by 2030, though some carriers could launch it in specific regions a year or two earlier.

China’s early positioning is notable. As SCMP reported, China Unicom chairman Liu Liehong said in 2023 that early 6G “application scenarios” would be introduced by 2025, with commercial rollout expected to start from 2030. The country has been conducting 6G research and development since 2019, following the principle of “commercialize one generation, develop the next.”

Meanwhile, NVIDIA is accelerating its entry into the telecom operator market, seeking Chinese base station manufacturers to develop 6G base stations meeting overseas market requirements, with trial networks targeted for 2027-2028.

What’s Next

For ordinary users, the question of when 6G will be accessible has a clear answer: around 2030. The technology is expected to deliver transformative capabilities—from immersive communication and ubiquitous connectivity to AI-powered services and integrated sensing. But as the People’s Daily commentary notes, some changes can be predicted while many more are difficult to accurately foresee.

What remains certain is that China’s systematic approach—from spectrum planning to phased testing to industry coordination—positions the country at the forefront of the global 6G race. As the commentary concludes, anchoring on the direction of technology for universal benefit and technology for good, with scientific planning and precise implementation, the pace of innovative development will become increasingly solid.
