Lukaku Heading to Fenerbahce as Napoli Deal Reached

Romelu Lukaku is on his way to Turkey. Fenerbahce has reached an agreement with Napoli for the transfer of the 33-year-old Belgian striker for a fee of €6 million plus bonuses, according to Sporza. The move will see Belgium’s all-time record scorer join the Istanbul club, dealing a blow to Anderlecht fans who had hoped for his return to his boyhood club.

A Difficult Season at Napoli

Lukaku’s departure from Napoli comes after a turbulent 2025-26 campaign in which he managed just seven appearances and one goal, with only 42 minutes of Serie A playing time. A serious hamstring injury suffered during preseason derailed his season, and his decision to rehabilitate in Belgium rather than with the club strained his relationship with Napoli management.

The situation deteriorated further when Napoli invested €44 million in Rasmus Hojlund from Manchester United, signaling that Lukaku would no longer be the club’s first-choice striker. Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna hinted at the changing hierarchy, telling La Gazzetta dello Sport: “Lukaku had a strong World Cup, but we will have to look at the situation. As a club we have invested heavily in Rasmus Hojlund, so we will have to align things.”

Lukaku’s agent, Fede Pastorello, responded firmly to suggestions his client could accept a backup role. “Romelu is not someone who stays where he is not wanted,” Pastorello told Sky Sport Italia. “That is a situation we cannot accept.”

After weeks of speculation linking Lukaku with clubs across Europe and the United States, Fenerbahce emerged as the frontrunner. Fenerbahce has been active in the summer transfer window, having already signed Mason Greenwood from Marseille and Nathan Aké from Manchester City. The club’s ambition is clear: reclaim the Turkish title and compete on the European stage. Lukaku, who scored three goals at the 2026 World Cup as a substitute for Belgium, brings proven pedigree to the project.

Anderlecht Fans Left Waiting

The transfer postpones, for at least one season, the homecoming that Anderlecht supporters had dreamed of. Lukaku has repeatedly stated his intention to end his career at the club where he made his breakthrough, and this summer he fueled hopes by posting Instagram photos from Brussels, including at a physiotherapy practice and in Anderlecht itself.

As Voetbalkrant noted, the move to Turkey means a return to Brussels is off the table for now. When Lukaku eventually returns to Anderlecht, he will be at least 34 or 35 years old, raising questions about whether he can still perform at the level his boyhood club would need.

Reports indicate a one-year deal with an option to extend for another season, though Turkish sources suggest a two-year agreement worth approximately €10 million per year including bonuses.

For Napoli, the sale relieves significant wage pressure — Lukaku earned roughly €11 million gross per season — and the club will also receive a portion of the fee, with 40% owed to Chelsea as part of the 2024 transfer agreement.
