Skywatchers across the Northern Hemisphere are gearing up for one of the most anticipated celestial events of the summer: the annual Perseid meteor shower. This year’s peak, occurring on the night of August 12-13, coincides with a new moon, providing ideal dark-sky conditions for what NASA calls the most popular meteor shower of the year.

As many as 50 to 100 meteors per hour may be visible under ideal conditions, according to NASA, while the American Meteor Society estimates 30 to 50 meteors per hour could be seen from rural regions. The shower’s Zenithal Hourly Rate—the number of meteors a single observer could see under perfect conditions—is 100.

A Cosmic Light Show

The Perseids are debris from comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, an icy ball that orbits the sun every 133 years and isn’t scheduled for a return visit until 2125, according to AP News. Observations of this meteor shower date back over 2,000 years, making it one of humanity’s oldest known celestial spectacles.

When Earth passes through the comet’s debris trail, particles collide with the atmosphere at extremely high speeds—about 37 miles per second—producing the streaks of light known as shooting stars. Most Perseid meteoroids are tiny, about the size of a sand grain, yet they reach temperatures of more than 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit as they travel through the atmosphere.

The Perseids are a perennial favorite because they tend to produce brilliant fireballs, and summer temperatures make viewing more comfortable than winter meteor showers. “We don’t have to suffer through a cold winter night to get a good view of meteors,” said astronomer Zach Vanderbosch with McDonald Observatory in Texas. “There’s just something magical about it.”

Perfect Viewing Conditions

This year’s peak is particularly special because the new moon on August 12 means no moonlight interference, creating optimal dark-sky conditions. “The moon is beautiful, but it’s such a diva,” said astronomer Aparna Venkatesan with the University of San Francisco. “New moon means we don’t have moonlight flooding the sky, and you tend to see way more meteors as a result.”

The peak also coincides with a total solar eclipse across Spain, Iceland, and Greenland, and a six-planet parade—though the best time to view the fireballs will come after totality, according to AP News.

How to Watch

To spot the meteors, go outside after dark, away from clouds and city lights. The best views will be between midnight and dawn when the constellation Perseus is high in the northern sky. The meteors appear to radiate from that constellation, which gives the shower its name.

EarthSky advises watching in the hours before dawn, noting that the radiant won’t have risen yet in the early evening. The Perseids are primarily visible in the Northern Hemisphere, though some can be seen from mid-southern latitudes.

Experts recommend giving your eyes a half hour to adjust to the darkness and picking a patch of sky to focus on until a quick, bright streak passes by—even in your peripheral vision. Avoid looking at your phone, which ruins night vision.

Space.com notes that no telescopes or binoculars are needed—the secret is to take in as much sky as possible. Lie flat on your back to soak up the view, and bring a blanket, jacket, hat, warm drink, and water to stay comfortable. Finding a local astronomy club event or meteor shower party can also enhance the experience.

What Makes the Perseids Special

Comet Swift-Tuttle is the largest object known to repeatedly pass by Earth, with a nucleus about 16 miles (26 km) wide. Its next pass in 2126 could make it a naked-eye comet similar in brightness to the 1997 Hale-Bopp comet.

The Perseids have a rich history of observation. In 1836, Adolphe Quetelet first noted the increased frequency of meteors in August, and in 1866, Giovanni Virginio Schiaparelli discovered the link between meteor showers and comets. The shower remains active from July 14 to September 1, 2026.

Looking Ahead

Skywatchers have even more to anticipate: a potential Perseid meteor storm is anticipated for 2028, with possible rates of at least 1,000 meteors per hour. For now, this week’s peak offers a spectacular opportunity to witness one of nature’s most dazzling displays.

As Vanderbosch put it, the Perseids are a reminder of the wonder that awaits those who simply look up. With perfect dark-sky conditions this year, there’s no better time to step outside and enjoy the show.
