Toyota Recalls 655K Camrys Over Display Error Affecting Turn Signals
Toyota is recalling approximately 655,000 Camry vehicles globally due to a display error that may deactivate turn signals and other safety indicators, the automaker confirmed Tuesday. More than 508,000 of the affected vehicles were sold in the United States, according to AP News.
The recall covers certain 2025-2026 Camry Hybrid models equipped with a 7-inch display combination meter that can become blank at startup. Beyond turn signals and hazard lights, the failure can also disable seat belt reminders, “key left in ignition” buzzers, and smart key reminder warnings, according to documents published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The Defect and Safety Risk
The 7-inch combination meter may fail to display at vehicle startup, preventing critical driving information and warning messages from appearing. As Toyota Motor North America explained in its official recall notice, this can cause the vehicle not to meet certain federal safety standards.
“If certain required information is not displayed in the combination meter, if the turn signal/hazard lamps do not function, or if certain warning buzzers do not activate, there can be an increased risk of injury or a crash depending on the specific situation,” the automaker stated.
NHTSA warns that these display failures increase crash risks, both for drivers who may not be able to see telltale indicators and for “the ability of other road users to recognize the driver’s intent to change direction or indicate a vehicle hazard.”
Affected Models and Global Scope
The recall affects Camry LE, SE, and Nightshade trims equipped with the 7.0-inch display. The XLE and XSE trims, which use a larger 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, are not affected by this defect.
Affected vehicles were produced between December 2023 and July 2026 across three plants located in the U.S., Japan, and Thailand. Toyota confirmed the recall affects markets in North America, the Middle East, Asia, and some countries in other regions.
Beyond the U.S., the recall extends internationally. CarExpert Australia reported that 16,238 Camry sedans made between May 14, 2024 and May 21, 2026 are affected in Australia, while Toyota New Zealand announced a parallel recall of 176 vehicles manufactured between June 2024 and November 2025.
The Remedy
Toyota will notify all known owners of affected Camrys to bring their vehicles to a certified dealer, where the combination meter software will be updated free of charge. Owner notification letters are set to be mailed starting Sept. 21 in the U.S., with Toyota expecting to complete those notifications by early October.
In the meantime, customers can check the NHTSA’s and Toyota’s online recall lookups to see if their vehicle is affected. Toyota customer support is also available by calling the Toyota Brand Engagement Center at 1-800-331-4331.
A Growing Pattern of Display-Related Recalls
This is not the first time Toyota has dealt with blank instrument cluster displays. In July 2025, Toyota Australia recalled 69,586 vehicles across multiple models—including the Camry Hybrid—due to a similar issue with the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. That recall was caused by improper programming that caused the memory device to deteriorate earlier than intended.
Toyota New Zealand also announced a parallel recall of 9,259 vehicles in the same campaign. The current recall marks the second time in a little over 12 months that the ninth-generation Camry has been affected by combination meter/display issues.
The recall also comes amid a broader wave of automotive safety actions. On the same day, Tesla recalled 20,349 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles over excessively bright low-beam headlights, bringing the combined total of U.S. vehicles recalled to more than 528,000.
Software Faults in the Modern Vehicle Era
The recall highlights how software-related faults are becoming increasingly significant in modern vehicles. Instrument clusters now do far more than display speed and fuel information—they serve as the primary interface for critical safety warnings and driver alerts. As automakers continue to digitize vehicle displays, the reliability of the software powering them becomes as critical as the mechanical engineering underneath.
Every new Camry sold in the U.S. uses a hybrid powertrain, making this one of the most widely distributed hybrid sedans on American roads. For the hundreds of thousands of owners affected, the fix is straightforward: a free dealer visit to update the software. But the recall serves as a reminder that even the most trusted nameplates are not immune to the growing complexity of modern vehicle electronics.
